A Healthy Decision

Today I went to my regular Sunday morning breakfast meeting. I did really well. I had 2 poached eggs and one piece of rye toast. Coffee and plenty of water.

Then I went to Costco.

Grabbed my cart and sailed right on it, all good intentions. Picked up the 2% milk, then wheeled on over to the produce section. Stopped on my way there and got a big box of biscuits for Winnie. Again head to the Produce section.

Stopped along the way to sample a goat cheese/walnut roll. It was divine! But I resisted getting it, because I knew I could make a whole meal out of that.

On my way to the produce section again and spy some freshly baked croissants. DH and I love those, and I package them up for freezing in packages of 2 as an attempt to not overdo on them. Taking one package out of the freezer at a time usually works well for us, with DH occasionally grabbing another one for defrosting.

Off to the Produce Section. I spot avocados and do my pinch testing. None of them are real ripe yet, but they find their way into the cart. Next to get romaine.

I check out the packaging dates,and find that the third heavy box down has a more recent date. So I lift two of the heavy boxes off that one, select my package of romaine, and then lift and replace the two heavy boxes on top of that one, the way the store had them arranged. Good doobie ME, huh!

Rounding the corner, I spot fresh spinach. Again, I have to lift three boxes this time to get the freshest, but I persevere on that task, replacing the boxes as found after making sure my spinach is in my basket.

I begin to wheel past artichokes, and repeat the usual by now process of removing boxes to find the best date picked, get the chokes in the cart, replace the boxes.

I have to reach clear in the back for the freshest packages of cucumbers, but what the heck. I manage to get them and replace the store display once again.

Ah. I spy asparagus across the isle. You know what I do by now. I have a very nice bundle of freshest asparagus available, and now I begin to wheel my way out of the refrigeration area.

As I am leaving the area, I am surprised by a man who says to me "You really put a lot into shopping, don't you. You make a real work out of it". I turn around, and there stands the produce manager, fiddling around with pre-cut pineapple containers.

"How long have YOU been here?" I query.

"Since before you rolled in".

A red-faced response of "oh".

He said "My mother is NOT going to believe that another woman does what SHE does when she comes in here. You and she must be real "freshest" fanatics. Maybe that's why she is in such good shape like you are."

Did you GET that??? "GOOD SHAPE" he said. To ME.

Feeling quite proud of myself, I roll toward the checkout.

Uh oh. Before I know it, my right arm and hand have reached out and grabbed a container of chocolate covered macadamia nuts. I have been eyeing them for a while, being able to resist until today.

They walk themselves into my cart. I swear they really DID! Well, almost anyway!

So I get home, put all the stuff away.

Yes. You are right.

I treated myself to one macadamia cluster. Honest. only ONE!!

I need to get myself busy with activity so those clusters STAY in their container!! I AM going to count "lifting heavy boxes of produce" to my daily workout track.

Egads. It is GOOD TO BE A SPARKY!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    Love that you worked so hard to get the freshest produce (go you!) and got caught by the produce manager, LOL! What a nice compliment to get; now about those macadamia nut clusters . . .

    Wow, you go girl!! Look at all the great stuff you got with very little "bad" items. We all need a SMALL treat once in a while - just don't eat the whole container at one sitting. And I love the fact that the manager not only noticed but compared you to his mom!!!

    Good job!!! Okay, here's some justification for that one scrumptious chocolate macadamia treat...

Macadamia nuts are a great source of protein, cholesterol lowering fats and they contain ALL the necessary amino acids and some extra ones! It's a good for you nut!

Chocolate is another protein source, triggers the release of those pleasure enhancing chemicals in the brain, is loaded with flavinoids and theobromines. It's a miracle food!

Best of all, they just taste so darn scrumptious!! emoticon
