What happens when you turn 40?

Saturday, July 27, 2013

SO I can't believe I am hitting 40 next month! It's really starting to hit me. I broke down and made some Dr appointments. One with "Women's Health".... I have been BAD and not gotten a female exam in 4-5 yrs. I figure 40 is a good time to get that taken care of. Will I have to start with the mammograms? My hubby (a nurse) seems to think they changed the age to 45 unless you have a family history or any lumps.

I also made an appointment for a general checkup with a regular Dr. I am hoping to get a cholesterol test and all of the other blood work done to see if I am healthy. I am going to talk to him about what an ideal weight for me is.... that question has been nagging me for ages. I am also hoping he will get me a referral to physical therapy for my foot issue and see what he thinks about cortisone shots. I really want to start running again, but keep telling myself that summer and the dreadful heat is a GOOD time to be out with an injury.... but hopefully by fall I will be back in shape to run.

UGH!!!! I don't know why 40 is making me so anxious. It feels like a whole new phase of life and even though I am physically in the greatest shape of my life I feel so anxious! Age has never bothered me before---- I have never yearned to be younger. DH is 6 yrs older than me so he got through it OK, most people think I am already 40+ (lol---jerks!)...

I'll make it.... just needed to vent. Any positive turning 40 stories would be much appreciated!

I just cannot believe how much more awesome CrossFit can get! How did this become such an obsession? My shy, quiet, private, reserved self is just a socializing fool at the "box". I am getting so much out of the community, family atmosphere down there. Last weekend we did a hero workout ("Glen") which is: 30 Clean and Jerks, run a mile, 10 rope climbs--- WHICH I DID!!!!, run ANOTHER mile, then 100 burpees. It took me just over an hour. Then we had a Paleo pancake breakfast. So much fun! And this past Tuesday we ran a 6K, then did 60 burpee pullups. I loved it because running is my strength in CrossFit (I'm kind of a weakling at the weight stuff) and I nailed the 6K... 100+ degree heat and all. My burpee pullups were kind of lame, but at least I got in a great workout. ARGH!!!! I love it so much. It's all I think about.... :)

My boyfriend is obessed with CrossFit too. I keep saying I'll join him "when I'm in better shape" I want to be able to make it through a workout, and not want to pass out in the first 5 minutes! Good on you for doing so well in the workouts. By the way, I have that milestone birthday coming up in April. I'm thinking I will plan a fabulous vacation somewhere as a distraction. I think it is going to hit me hard.

According to a survey by Health Plus magazine, it's women in their 40s who are having the best sex of their lives."

Forty never bothered me but fifty did so I guess I can't tell you much except to embrace it. Hopefully all they say is true that you know what you want and how to get it now so it's a good time in your life.

Like others said 40 is just a number, it's how you feel on the inside and how you feel about yourself. I think men are better at aging than some women (except some that have mid life crisis) emoticon My husband is 12 years older than I am and he is in better shape than some 20's. I know this b/c he ran circles around them on the soccer field.

That is great that you are loving CrossFit.

Good Luck with your drs appts.

Just want to say that 40 is just one day older than you were...it's no big deal! I truly feel the 40s have been the best decade of my life in many ways...I'm in the best shape, feeling healthy and strong, and much more confident and wiser than I used to be. Every age has it's blessings...just enjoy each one!

I've been having mammograms since I was 35 because my mom had breast cancer twice. Just check with your dr.

Glad things are going so well for you at Cross Fit!

Everyone said 30 would be the bad one. But 30 didn't bother me - 40 for some reason did. Like you, I stewed and fretted and, in general, dreaded the day.
However, it came and passed - no big deal. I will tell you, once you get past 40 the rest of the years seem a breeze! At it IS all in your mind - I still think I am 26!

I had my first & only mammogram when I was 40 & I haven't been to a dr since we moved 4 yrs ago . . . I spend all my time taking the animals to the vets! But seriously I do need to find one.

So far age has never bothered me. After all, what's the alternative, right?

I loved turning 40. It was the point where I realized I could afford my life. And I had quit smoking to celebrate turning 40.
I think we come into our own in our 40s. here's to you being even more of a lean CrossFit machine.

I also had a harder time with 30 than with 40 or even 50! 40 and 50 were as if nothing happened, just another day! And my health did not change or suffer one bit from year to year! Stay happy and healthy and time just does what it wants, you'll hardly notice it! As Holly said, we are not only getting older, we are getting better!

I had a harder time with 30 than with 40. Just trying to think of things I want to accomplish by the time I turn 50 or 60. Hopefully I will be running 5Ks at 60. Can't imagine being old and sitting around doing nothing. They say your only as old (or young) as you feel!

Can't believe you're running in that heat. It was in the 70s with much lower humidity this morning and that's the only reason I attempted a long run today. Otherwise it would have been on the treadmill. I can't wait for fall, either :o) I hope your PF clears up by then.

I did get a baseline mammogram this year and they said I should get one every year. Since insurance covers it, I probably will. It's no worse than a regular gyno visit. I need to get my health levels checked, too. I haven't done that in 3 years. Guess I'll schedule that next month when the kids get back in school. And don't get me started about the dentist. It's been way too long since I've been there, either, and now I'm almost afraid to go :o(

wow, you are a lean mean machine! I loved turning 40 and have enjoyed every year since then. Age is only a number much like the number on the scale.
I think the mammo age is still 40. You should have a base line.
Just remember that we are not only getting older, we are also getting better!
