Guitar toss and vacation

Saturday, July 27, 2013

So today is the first day of vacation. Both of us slept in just past 8 am. We were up late listening to Jim's ham radio after watching a movie. Was going to spray the lawn for weeds, but was too windy. Did a few errands and then home to work in he garage for a while. Turned out to be a very cool day with rain off and on. We pulled down the old extra pieces of siding we had in the garage rafters from years ago and put up in the rafters the new extra siding pieces we had left over form when the house was resided a few years ago. Will bring the old siding to the recycling place this week. Is aluminum so is worth a few bucks.

Went to the guitar toss. I got 3 guitars in the dumpster. I had 20 tickets I had bought and would go thru the line doing three at a time. My best was getting 2 in a row in the dumpster! Each time you get one in the dumpster you can pick out a prize-T shirts, kazoo, guitar strings, a few toy items for kids. I took one T shirt for my first successful toss. The next two I told two little girls to pick out prizes for themselves. I also gave one of the girls 4 of my tickets. She had a broken arm and that gave her some extra chances.

It was pretty windy out there and some drizzle off and on, but the parking lot there was full of people. The toss line was long, but it moved along. The guitars were taking a beating. The "pit crew" was duct taping, them back together like crazy. I had fun. Jim just hung around the shop and talked while I tossed and tossed.

Came home and figured we could tackle the garage or gutters since it was cool out. Jim crawled up to look at the gutters on the north side of the house we have wanted to take down. Looks like taking them down is not an easy project- should have done it when we had the roof reshingled. So change of plans, they needed to be cleaned bad so if they weren't coming down, that's what I did, cleaned the gutters. Of course it started to drizzle, but I was so close to being done I just stuck with it and finished. Dragged out the hose and sprayed down the house and the gutter to rinse it all out. At least I know it's done.

Relaxing now with Jim and the ham radio. Listening to Jim talking to various other ham radio operators. Discussing what to do for supper- no plans yet. Just a nice fun and productive day.

We're having the wood shakes on the front of the house replaced. We've had a leak in a valley that hasn't responded to repairs so it has to be replaced up to the roof top. The back shakes are 25 years old but still in decent shape. Wood shakes last 40 years but are quite expensive. We have a lot of roof area so this is a major job. We think the problems came from an ice dam caused by sweet locust seed pods frozen in the valley. We had one of the offending trees removed and the other cut back drastically. We'll make a decision on the removal in a month or so. We're hoping they'll get to it soon.
