Recovery Concerns or Not

On Thursday I had an energy surge and ran faster than I had planned to for about 4 miles, without walk breaks, on the YMCA treadmill. SparkFriends were encouraging, but reminded me to allow for recovery. I was not aware of any recovery issues 10 minutes after completing the run. I mean, I cooled down, showered, ate a healthy snack and felt good the rest of the day. Slept good that night, too.

I enjoyed today's run. I ran 7.5 miles with my Galloway group in 2.5 minute run/1 minute walk intervals. Our average pace was around 11:33, completing the run in 1 hour 25 minutes. My Garmin recorded that we had 316 feet of incline and 316 feet of decline, so we had some hills. We actually didn't start running until 6:20 (scheduled for 6am.) The temperature was 75 degrees with 100% humidity per the Garmin, but no, it wasn't raining. Yes, we were all drip-drip-dripping sweat! A fellow runner advised me to put a chunk of ice in my sports bra at mile 5.5; I tried it and liked it!

Last year, when I ran with a slower group, I always finished wanting to run more and faster. Not today. I felt like I got a good work out. I never minded getting to the running intervals, but looked forward to the walk interval every time. On the downhill and straightaways, I'd be at the front of the pack. On the uphill stretches I often fell to the back. The sports massage therapist I saw told me that it takes 72 hours to recover from our runs, although that seems long to me. But I wonder if I hadn't run so hard on Thursday, would I have had a little more energy for today's run? Would I have embraced the run intervals, been at the front of the pack the whole way, and finished with a long burst of speed like last week? Guess it really doesn't matter; I ran-walked-ran it and enjoyed it. I know to taper for the week before any competition.

I'm feeling pretty good right now -- no muscle soreness nor tightness. After I showered and ate, I went and got my hair trimmed and styled for my high school reunion this evening. I'm not bursting with energy right now, but have enough to do a little laundry and a few chores before getting ready for the event this eve. Perhaps I need to learn a little more about recovery, but I bet I'll sleep good tonight, too!

    I think that the humidity plays a huge part in how we feel after working out outside. Remember that you worked out in the air conditioning when you ran for 30 minutes and felt so good. I was very busy on Friday and did two brief workouts outside. By the time I went to bed, I was totally wiped out! I drank loads of water and other fluid and still was tired.

    Energy comes and goes. There will be runs that suck, and runs that soar. The important thing is to not get injured, endure the sucky ones, and savor the soaring ones, right?

    I wish, wish WISH I had a Galloway group near me, but alas, the closest one is in a city an hour away. I've been doing 5K 101 that I downloaded from i-Tunes, and TC and I are going to run intervals tomorrow -- 2 minutes run, 1 minute walk. We will see how far we get!

    I think recovery time is an individual thing...you'll figure out how much you need as you go along.

    Yes, the faster run probably did affect today's run, but not so much that you couldn't / didn't accomplish today's objectives, which is the key consideration.
