Why isn't the "fat lady" singing?

Friday, July 26, 2013

Well isn't that what they say... it isn't over until the fat lady sings? I really need the "reign of terror" of what ever keeps "attacking" my dog to be over! He is my absolute best walking partner and I think those days are over... at least until we have a hard frost and everything in the woods is dead. We went to one of our favorite walking spots today (which was different from the last one) and had a great time. He ran, he swam.... everything was great until we were riding home and he started to "shake" himself off (like dogs do when they are wet) only he wasn't wet. He just kept doing that repetitively until I realized OMG!!!...... here we go again! He was covered in welts worse than the last time, except this time his face didn't swell. He was so pink around his eyes, ears and mouth that it was almost flourescent! Long story short I went right to the vet, they gave him Epi, Benadryl and steroids, but this time when they gave him the Epi he almost went into anaphylaxis. Unfortunately, being that it's Friday, the regular vet was closing so we had to transfer him to the emergency vet because they didn't want to send him home. They were going to keep him overnight, but I decided to take him home, give him two more doses of Benadryl tonight and watch him. Right now the patient is resting very quietly, sound asleep in one of his favorite chairs. I think he will be fine tonight, but I am definitely not taking him in the woods again. I think for the rest of the summer we will stick to swimming at the lake. I'm exhausted too.... once that adrenaline stops flowing it really knocks you on your a**! Dog is sleeping.... I'm drinking wine! emoticon emoticon

YIKES! Did they talk to you about keeping him on Benadryl for the bug season? We did that with our bee-allergic dog.... That was 2 summers ago - no return of symptoms in subsequent years (knock on wood). So it may not necessarily be a permanent thing.

Fingers crossed Gibby can get back to doing what you both enjoy so much - safely and without frightening trips to the emergency room.

That has to be pretty scary. I'm glad he's okay now, but I can see why waiting for colder weather might be a good idea for walking in the woods with him again.

It does sound like an allergic reaction. Poor dog. Good thing he is sleeping and not scratching. take a break and get some rest yourself. Hope it all works out all right.

Oh, poor Gibby and you! So scary and I'm so glad that it sounds like he's on the mend. Sound asleep in his favorite chair! Oh sweet. I love it! I hope that you both have a wonderful day once Gibby feels all better. emoticon

Oh Ann, I'm so sorry! It sounds like he's developed an allergy to something he wasn't allergic to before. That can happen overnight (literally). A similar thing happened to me years ago and my soft contact lenses, I woke up one morning and my eyes were red, swollen, itching, etc. The eye doctor said I'd developed an allergy and my contact wearing days were over. Weird. I think you and Gibby may be doing a lot of lake swimming from now on in the summer. Thank goodness he's OK, how scary for you though, at least you have the weekend to recouperate. Have another glass of wine, I think I would.
