New Doctor!

Friday, July 26, 2013

So, I went to my new doctor on Wednesday. She is WONDERFUL! I told her about the problems I had with my old doctor. I told her about that doctor calling the Hoveround people and telling them that I didn't need a wheel chair, I could use a walker and that he felt that all my problems would be solved by losing weight. My new doctor,Dr Nolan was appalled! She said that it was obvious from my medical history that my problems had nothing to do with my weight! Yeah, Dr Nolan!

When I first got to the appointment, the nurse did a EKG. She said that Dr Nolan always orders one, so she started doing them before the doctor came in. The nurse ran the EKG twice and I didn't think anything of it. When the doctor came in she had the EKG printout in her hand and she said, "I am not happy with the results of this! You have atrial flutter!" I was shocked! Up until now no one has ever said I had heart problems! Dr Nolan asked me to describe what happens when I get one of my "dizzy spells". I told her that I get lightheaded, nauseous, start to sweat and feel like I am going to black out. She said that what I was experiencing was caused by my heart arrhythmia. This has been going on for at least five years and nobody found it?!!!!
Dr Nolan put me on Atenolol to slow down my heart rate, and she called a Cardiologist friend of hers and got me an appointment with her. I also asked her about getting the home PT/INR instrument (I have been trying to get this for years, but no doctors would do it) and she said absolutely! I would be a great candidate for this system! I am so happy about that! It means that I can do my bloodwork at home, instead of going to the hospital. I will be able to check my blood thinner level once a week and be able to adjust my dose! I am so excited about this!
I have finally found a doctor who listens to me and doesn't judge me! I am so glad that I found her!

How wonderful - hang onto her with both hands! No one should have a health "care" team that doesn't care. Fire them, and get someone who does, and will partner with you - not just "treat" you.

It sounds like you could discuss plenty of things that the previous doctor probably wouldn't have had the time or inclination for. I hope you can get your powerchair (don't settle on a Hoveround™ - I have a Jazzy™, and it's good, too). I'm moderately outraged about the arrhythmia. That's a really significant issue. I'm so glad you're going to get better support for that now.

All in all, things seem to be looking up, huh?!?

Yeah for you! Good doctors are essential for good health. Sadly, they are not always so easy to find. I'm happy that you finally found a doctor who would listen to you and help you in the way(s) you need help. Hopefully with Dr. Nolan on your side, your health will improve. I pray for that. Wishing you the best. . . always. emoticon

When my primary retired I went through several before I found one who would listen and speak to me like an intelligent and knowledgeable person . I makes all the difference. I want to participate in my health care not just have someone else decide what is best for me. Sounds like you too. emoticon
