Try.....such a little word but sometimes such a BIG effort. My new running Mantra is Try, Train, Trust and Triumph! I am training for a half marathon and honestly the "try part" didn't take long. Try was deciding to do it and pressing forward. Try was only a decision to do or not to do. Moving through all the "What If's" to the real effort.
Train.....now that is the hard part. Looks good on paper but in real life, my real life, it is hard. Follow the plan. When the plan is to run 3 miles that is what you do. When the plan is to run 9 miles, just go do it. When the plan calls for speed work, pace running, or even easy running, that is what I must do to the best of my ability. Follow the plan as others have that have run before you. Don't think too much about it, just look at the plan and do what is scheduled for that day.
Trust....perhaps the most difficult of all for it is the mental part of the equation. I need to trust in the plan that has helped others succeed. Trust the training is what I have heard, trust your training. I trust the training but some times I just don't trust myself. Some days I don't believe that I really can do this. "Who do I think I am?" I hear myself saying. I don't trust in my own ability.
Fact is, most of the time, I do see myself finishing the half. I do see myself following the plan. I envision the success and accomplishment of my goal. I am doing the work to reach that finish line and I am seeing progress and improvement. I see the value in the journey, it is not just about the finish line. The "getting there" is quite a process and achievement in itself. I guess now that I have realized that, I have Triumph no matter what. (But let there be no mistake, I want to cross that line!) There will never be another first half marathon for me. There is nothing like the first time!
Never try, never win. Always try, always win!
