Chicago Sprints weekend

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Posting a blog for the chicago sprints. I'm moving in a month and leaving my rowing club and friends so I have mixed emotions about everything.

We started Friday morning riding the Megabus from St. Louis to Chicago. I traveled with these 4 ladies.

We arrive at the Chicago, took a cab to our hotel and discover.....That we only have 1 bed and not 2. There is a lot of discussion and we end up in a room with 1 bed, 1 roll away and 5 woman. We got quite close this weekend.

We cooled down and then head out for dinner. We a few of the other people from our group. Towards the end of dinner we get bad news. There has been an incident with our boat. The bow has broken off. Our boat is unrowable, but we are assured that we will get to row. When we see the boat the next day, its bad, but I at least had imagined worse.

We were not racing on Saturday, but our coach raced in the masters mens 8+. They make the semi finals but do not advance to the finals. They are third.

After all the races are done we get a chance to try the boats we are going to race in tomorrow. There are some issues, someone had put the wrong riggers on one of the boats, but they get resolved the next morning.

The next day I race in the master womens 4+. Heres the people in our boat. Theres the 4 of us that row and our coxswaine who steers and directs and motivates. I don't think anyone took pictures of us. The mens 4+ race was right before ours and life was hectic. We rowed a good race. Unfortuanely shortly before the finish line the boat next to ours caught a crab and veered into out lane. We needed to dodge their boat and then make a second sharp turn to avoid hitting a bridge wall. We finishe 7 out of 12. Boat 6 only beat us my 1 second and we can't help but think we lost at least a second with the near collision. Still we probably did not lose enough time that it would have put us in the top 4, which is what we'd need to advance to semi.

Next I rowed in a mixed double. We did well for us, but we still need to work on the speed thing.
The day ended with the mixed master 8+. I was not in this race. They won their heat and place 3rd out of 5/

Rushed to the train station and took the train home

What an interesting weekend. I noticed that the four of you all seem to be about the same height. Is that an advantage when rowing together?

Looks like it was a fun event! I can imagine your feelings, but I think you're likely to find kindred folks in Philly!
