Downsizing

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

I bought a much new smaller more energy-efficient refrigerator for my small kitchen. Earlier this year I bought a new 1/2 size energy star dishwasher to replace my full size one. I'm trying to save money and decrease my carbon footprint. I'm trying to decrease the amount of stuff I own and buy, as well.

I've been married 30 years today. I've got at least 15 more years to go before I even think about retirement.

I went to see Mom and Dad this week. Mom is doing really well in assisted living. Dad is in the nursing home part of the retirement home. He has dementia. He is talking less and getting more confused. But, he is getting good care. He still enjoys eating and going in the whirlpool tub. He still recognizes Mom and I. Dad is 90 and Mom is 89. They have been married 65 years.

I started tracking my food again. I've been eating extra portions and goodies at work. I've been doing well on my exercising.

My fitness center near my house closed, so I have to drive a little farther now. But, it is worth the drive. It is a women's only fitness center. I really enjoy the indoor pool, the whirlpool, the sauna, and the steamroom. It's not really busy when I go, so I have no trouble getting to use the equipment I enjoy. I'm not really good at going to the exercise classes. I enjoy doing my own thing, lately. My husband is disabled with a head injury, COPD, and CHF, so he is home most of the time. It is nice to get away and not have to listen or talk to anyone.

My skin has been doing so much better. I have seborrhea dermatitis on my face and scalp. It has been doing very well. I am taking a break from sailing this whole Spring and Summer. When I sail in the Spring in Summer it is so hot. I sail in the intercoastal, here in the Gulf of Mexico. I have to get my head wet when I'm out there in the heat. I think there is something in the water that bothers my skin. When the water temp. is in the 80's there is a lot more bacteria and fungi brewing. When it gets bad, I scratch and pick at it. It's so hard for me not to.

I'm glad to hear your parents are in good care. My dad turned 80 in May and both of my parents still live in the home they bought in 1955.

I think being able to track food is the best thing about Spark. No, I was wrong. It's my Spark friends.

Amazing!!! Here you are downsizing into something more reasonable when the rest of society is racing to see who can make the biggest freezer or whatever. You sound like a good daughter and your husband is a very lucky man....so that makes you a super star and you should treat yourself like one, too. I'd love to be sailing with you. The Intercoastal Waterway is hardly heard of outside the East Coast. I used to live in Norfolk and work in Chesapeake.

your fitness center sounds awesome, there is nothing around here with whirlpools or saunas, just the basics. congrats on 30 years! i hope i can say the same in the future! congrats on the smaller fridge and dishwasher too. at some point bigger was better, and i think we are all realizing now doing with less is really the better option. you are working around the tough stuff in life and keep making the best of it, i really admire you for your perseverance and creativity. hope there's lots of animal snuggles in the forecast :)

    Happy Anniversary!

With all the health issues you've mentioned, I'm glad you're able to go to the fitness center and get some special time for yourself.

And way to go with the downsizing! That's a big step that I have yet to take.

You may some sensitivity to the various plankton/microorganisms in the water... when they get optimum conditions they can really multiply, and cause havoc with skin exposure...

Hang in there!

sounds like you have a full plate, and are handling it all relatively smoothly, kudos to you, and so glad you found a fitness center you enjoy and can get away to use it, it is so important to me, to get to my fitness center, work a bit in the garden and go for my solitary walks, I need it to help my head stay in tune emoticon

Sounds like you are handling multiple family health issues with grace and style. Glad you are tracking and your women's gym sounds perfect. Must be difficult not to sail, but sounds like the warm water does irritate your skin - hope it cools soon, so you can

Happy Anniversary! My you have a lot on your plate! I'm so glad you found a new fitness center you like; it's important for you to have the time to take care of yourself. I prefer working out on my own too; with the exception of my yoga class. The class pushes me harder than I do on my own. Glad you are tracking, keep making healthy choices. Be well.
