I've really been having trouble staying active in this heat. I have no desire to go for my usual outdoor runs. For some reason, I haven't even been motivated enough to pop in a DVD for an indoor workout. I've felt like I'm in a rut.
So with the forecast for this morning being relatively mild (upper 70s, low 80s), I decided to get up early and go out for a bike ride to a waterfront park. It ended up being just over 12 miles. I've been nervous to go out for a ride alone, as my new city has exactly one real bike lane and lots of harried, impatient drivers. 7:30am on a Sunday morning seemed like a good place to start. I'm so glad I pushed myself to go for it. The ride went smoothly enough and I made it to my destination feeling empowered. I can hold my own as a bicyclist on a wide, two-lane, fast-moving road. With every ride, I know I'm going to feel more comfortable and more confident.
After my ride, I had time for a quick shower before heading off to the community yoga class I discovered a few weeks ago. I just love it. Despite being donation only, the class has been small and intimate each time -- today there were about 10 people, which is the biggest I've seen it. The pace isn't killer, but the instructor introduces poses that are new to me and give me a challenge. I feel stronger, but also rejuvenated and relaxed after each class. It puts me in a good place to start the week.
Anyway, I just found a Living Social coupon for a great deal at a fitness studio just a couple minutes walk from my apartment. They offer all sorts of classes -- yoga, pilates, zumba, bootcamp, and more. It's already one of the best value studios in my city, but the coupon makes the monthly unlimited pass a third of the original price! I'm hoping maybe a change of scenery and workout style will help motivate me to get back into a routine. I'll get back into distance running when the weather's a little more comfortable.
