Exercise is NOT fun

I have been a member of Spark People since June of 2009. I have alternated between being glued to the site and being slightly apathetic about it. My weight has reflected my commitment to the site and I have watched it fluctuate. Overall, my weight has moved in a downward trend, but at a very slow pace. I have read blog after blog from other members who have lost a great deal of weight and I have celebrated with them.

One thing that I have to say, to all of those people who talked about their journey and how they went from being a couch potato to LOVING to exercise and how everyone who follows a similar journey will find that love of exercise, YOU LIED!.

I hate exercise; I struggle every day to exercise. Each time I take my walk, or do strength training it is a CHORE. Iím not finding the joy in exercising, it is simply something on my To-do list that I complete. Recently at the urging of some of my Spark Friends I purchased a FitBit in April. That little device has helped me MOVE my behind. I found myself searching for ways to walk more during the day just to compete, if even only in my mind, with my fellow Spark Friends.

I started averaging about 5k steps a day and have moved up to averaging 12k steps a day. I started taking walks on Saturday and Sunday and slowly moved from a one mile walk to walking five miles on Saturdays and three miles on Sunday. I put my MP3 player in my pocket and cue up a good book on tape and away I go.

But for all of that, for all of my determination to walk on the weekend, I still HATE exercise. So I guess Iím just one of those folks who will never enjoy exercise, but continue to view it as a chore. For all of my fellow Sparkers who donít enjoy exercise, donít worry, and just add it to the TO-DO list and youíll do fine.

    I'm with you and a few of the others who have said that even now they don't enjoy exercise. But we DO it anyway, and that's what matters. I love my fellow ASKers and the way we encourage each other to get 'er done. I may never learn to love exercise, but I'm going to continue anyway thanks to you! (Long live the Fitbit!)

    First, CONGRATS on just GETTING IT DONE! Secondly, I think none of us, (except Donna and Janet on ASK) have given it the commitment and time for our bodies to CRAVE exercise and at least LIKE it. Just a thought. One I hold on to, because I feel the SAME WAY YOU DO!!

Remember: No matter how slow you go, you are still LAPPING COUCH POTATOES!!

    First, let me say how awesome your walking numbers are ... especially when you aren't even a little bit fond of walking. Kudos to you for getting it done! I guess when it comes to our health we have to JUST DO IT! Maybe I should listen to that when it comes to eating within my calorie range and/or cutting out the junk I eat.

Enjoy your walk today! Molly and I set out on a walk by the zoo and it began to pour about 10 minutes in so we went back to the car and drove home. There wasn't a single drop of rain in my neighborhood. I hate when that happens.

    But I'll bet you miss it when you skip a day? I understand, I really do. We joined around the same time and I could've written that first paragraph. Let's just keep on keeping on as best we can.

    As you know, I love my runs but I just have to FORCE myself to do ST...some things just seem to click for us and some things never will. I know that part of the reason running and walking work for me is that I CRAVE being outside in the dark months my walks save me...all of the indoor exercise options are just work. Oh, and I tried an exercise video that had some kind of kick boxing type moves in it and I really really hated that. What can I say?

BUT, getting my fitbit, and trying to keep up with you and the rest of our peeps, has really put some fire in the action. It's ridiculous really how checking the dashboard can make me get up and move just to try to catch up! LOL

Bottom line, it doesn't matter so much if it's a chore or we enjoy it, it only matters that we stick together and do it!

    Sable, we are truly sisters at heart. I often find that if I walk right away in the morning, that's the best, cuz then I've gotten it done for the day. You are doing a great job getting all those steps. Just keep losing pounds.

    Take heart, you are definitely not alone. Exercise is often more than the work of just doing it. Time, heat, effort, delayed reward-if it could all be like doubles tennis for me. I enjoy the fellowship and challenge, these other guys are 25 years older and have learned some moves ove the years. Like you, I put my audiobooks on and walk on other days. The worst for me is looking at calories for something I like, then figuring out how many steps/time it takes to burn that off. Keep going!
