“Autobiography in Five Short Chapters”

Saturday, July 20, 2013

I was in a bible study this past year and our leader read this poem at the beginning of class. She read it this week again as we concluded our class. I came home, found it online and read it to my husband. He asked a great question, "what chapter are you in?"

Wow! I'm not sure. Depends on the area of my life. I hope I'm getting to Chapter 5 more and more.

What chapter are you in?

“Autobiography in Five Short Chapters”
by Portia Nelson

I
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost ... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

II
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

III
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

IV
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

V
I walk down another street.

It's like the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Great post! Thanks for sharing!

Love the poem, as far as where I am, I guess it depends on the day and what I'm doing! Sometimes I take a different street, other times I go kerplunk right into the hole! You've given me something to think about, thanks!

I have a similar story for grief loss.

Lots of people think that there is a timetable for "getting over" a death like this, but I don't it's something you actually "get over.
" The best anology I have come up with is that it's like a giant hole that suddenly and inexplably appears in your living room floor. You couldn't prevent it from happening, and for the rest of your life you will wish it weren't there, that your living room was like it used to be, like everyone else's. At first, you will fall in that big hole constantly, because it's so new and unavoidable. But, as you live with it longer, it does't get any smaller; you just sort of get used to it being there. Sometimes you still fall into it, but generally not as often, and each time it gets easier to get back out. And sometimes you will choose to climb down in the hole for a while, because you need to, and then you'll climb out again when you're ready. But if you try to deny the hole is there, or believe that it will somehow go away, you'll hurt even more.

This is wonderful! I wonder if I know what chapter I'm in. I'll be thinking about this for a while.

Thank God for Truth, so we don't have to be deceived and say, "It isn't my fault."
Make right choices!

    Love, love, love it!!

I never understood when people said you are where you are because you choose to be here. I strongly disagreed!

When I started taking responsibility for my own life, everything changed!!

I'm wobbling between 4 & 5. It just depends on how my day is going. But, I must say that I have more 5s than 4s!!!

Thank you, for the insight!!!

Be blessed,
