Pedometer Time!!

Thursday, July 18, 2013

My workplace is trying to get people more active, so they started up a little 10k steps competition. Getting more active is a key component of my new healthy life, so I signed up.

When you sign up, you get a pedometer. Unfortunately, I am currently traveling, so I couldn't pick one up. So instead I downloaded the app "Pacer" for my iPhone.

What a nifty little device! It's ridiculously easy to use - download and go! You can go into the profile screen to adapt it to your weight, height, age, sex, etc., but you could just start walking with the default settings (I think 5'4" and 130 pounds???).

Ever since I downloaded it last night, I've been intrigued with watching the number go up. I happen to do a lot of walking when I am out of state, so the numbers went up...and up...and up! By the end of my work day, I had 15,000 steps!! Already more than the 10k that is "recommended"! Add to that the 40 minutes I kicked out on the treadmill brought me to a whopping 22k!

Now, I don't think I'll be able to rack up THAT many steps every day. But I do like seeing how active I am and having an incentive to get my rear in gear!

What's even better? Pacer has a FREE version for iPhone! So if you have an iPhone, feel free to check it out!

(NOTE: There were a LOT of pedometers available for iPhone, but I just chose Pacer because I had read some good reviews and it was free. The others may be just as good - maybe even better, depending on what you are looking for in a pedometer app. Feel free to check out a bunch and compare!)

Lovely! I just bought a FitBit Zip pedometer and I love it. It comes with some really neat software that allows you to analyze your results and track your progress every day.

Oh, thanks for this info! You know what, I was just thinking about purchasing one of these little devices, just because every time I get stuff for the gym (like new gloves, new running shoes), or something for the diet (like new spices, or try a new recipe), I get super psyched and self-motivated. But they're just so expensive -and let's face it, eating right is also very pricey, so I thought OK, let's not get carried away here, one thing at a time. But with this info you just shared, I'm definitely going to check it out!
Thanks and congrats on that AMAZING number BTW!!

The pedometer app sounds like fun! I can't believe you walked/ran 22k! I bet that was quite a surprise since you hadn't been tracking it previously.
