Summertime activity: I can do it now!

Something has changed this time around. Today it is incredibly warm and humid here. The heat index is 102...it's muggy and uncomfortable. A few years ago, I would have been essentially down for the count. I would go out only to get to work. The heat would have actually made me ill and dizzy.
This year...having a gym membership at a facility with a pool, I can go swimming whenever I can get to the gym. I try to go 3 to 4 days a week. I get up early and get to the gym at 5:30 am so I can swim before work.
I have always loved walking, and when I was at my heaviest (205 lbs) I tore the meniscus in my right knee. With the extra weight, it was painful to walk. I had to go up stairs slowly, one step at a time. I was looking a surgery. Winter was frightening; we have icy, snowy winters here, and I do not drive. Walking to the bus stop was hard and dangerous. I fell a few times, and it was hard to get up. Summertime, I couldn't walk because I would get overheated. Plus, to put it bluntly, I sweat and I stunk when I sweat, so I couldn't get too hot and go to work.
This is leading up to today. I work at a college that has access to a park with walking paths along the Genesee River. I wasn't going to take a walk because of the heat, but sitting at my desk all morning made me antsy. So I filled up a large water bottle and headed out. If it was too hot, I'd just walk around the campus for a few minutes and head back in. Well, I made it to the river, and then back. There was a lot of shade and a breeze, and I can handle the heat now, as long as I'm careful and keep hydrated. The hot, humid weather is great for the plants...lots of wild flowers. The ducks were out; the birds were chirping up a storm. What a great break in the middle of my work day. I was only out for half an hour, but it revitalized me.
I am so glad that I can enjoy the outdoors again. I take long walks, I garden, I swim. I'm thinking of getting a bicycle when I have a little extra money.
Losing weight, getting fit, and changing my lifestyle and attitude has been a blessing. I am 53, but I feel younger than I have for years.
