Passing a Positive Challenge Forward

A few days ago, a lovely new SparkFriend, LDRICHEL, posted a blog post recommending this video: (see bottom of page... unfortunately I can't tuck the link in here!)

I am a HUGE fan of TedTalks -- and of Happiness for that matter! -- so I watched all fast-moving and funny 12 minutes of it. Shawn Achor, my friends, is a treat!

On Friday, I posted a link to Shawn Achor's TEDx Talk called "The Happy Secret to Better Work".

The key idea from his talk was this:

"If happiness is on the opposite side of success, your brain never gets there. What we’ve done is we’ve pushed happiness over the cognitive horizon as a society. That’s because we think we have to be successful, THEN we’ll be happier. But the REAL problem is, our brains work in the opposite order. If you can raise somebody’s level of positivity in the present, then their brain experiences something that we now call a ‘happiness advantage’, which is: your brain at positive performs significantly better than it does at negative, neutral or stressed.” ~Shawn Achor

While Achor's talk was tailored towards success in business (which I obviously desire), I believe his activities for increasing happiness (below) will have a positive effect on EVERY area of my life. So, I'm taking his challenge to train my brain to be more positive.

1. Three new gratitudes each day will teach your brain to retain a pattern of scanning the world not for the negative, but for the positive first.

2. Journaling about one positive experience you've had over the past 24 hours allows your brain to re-live it.

3. Exercise teaches your brain that your behavior matters.

4. Meditation allows your brain to get over the cultural ADHD that we've been creating by trying to do multiple tasks at once.

5. Random or conscious acts of kindness - send a positive e-mail to thank or praise someone in your social support network.

So, let's do this thing! emoticon "*

I jumped on board yesterday, creating a new Word doc, saved on my desktop, entitled "Five Positive Practices Challenge," then copy and pasted:

3 Gratitudes
Journaling 1 + thing in the past 24 hrs
Exercise
Meditation
Act of kindness

21 times for the next three weeks' practice, and would like to invite you to join us!

    It not only sounds like fun, it is fun! It's an uplifting, cheerful practice. The experience of being positive every day just makes you more positive, makes you look for the positivity and really does influence and change your behavior and mentality.

When I decided to start putting these things into place prior to ever watching this particular TED talk, the entire premise of Positive attracting Positive" became crystal clear to me.

(Putting it into practice also includes my SP behavior where I make a positive blog post daily and support and encourage fellow Sparkers).

Focus on the positive. Reframe thoughts and actions positively. Positive attracts positive.

Consider all the things that are much more palatable when we put a positive spin on them.

Wonder why anyone would choose negative over positive!
