on a bike... and not falling off

I have a bike! My first bike in... seriously 20 years. I kind of learned to ride as a child but did not continue and, honestly, I had no interest in riding a bike until recently when circumstance held me captive in a chair on a computer for months on end and the sun started to cthe baome out... I decided I needed to learn to ride a bike again. Or, in my case, learn how to ride a bike PERIOD. My boyfriend and I had spent some time bike shopping from the high-end stores with beautiful bikes to basics at stores like walmart. Specifically, I was interested in a comfort bike, one I could ride easily in urban spaces. I also wanted a bike with gears because I live in a hilly city. Now, I could have gone for a BEAUTIFUL elektra bike but I don't have $600+ to spend on one so my boyfriend appeared at my house on Friday with the simple $150 comfort bike model from Canadian Tire (good reviews and I liked it best of most of the bikes I sat on, yes, I pretty much just sat on them!). Saturday we went out to get him the bike he'd had his eyes on (it has no gear shifts, but luckily if he doesn't like it he can still return it in 30 days!), and helmets. Our first ride was yesterday. We were out for maybe about 45 minutes, riding up and down and around some slightly hilly streets by my place, initially I was avoiding this steep area of a path (seriously, nothing scary, I just didn't want to try) but then, after at least half an hour, I took him to the other side and he managed to convince me to TRY going down it... and I went down with my breaks squeaking but I didn't manage to quite turn back up the switch-back so I had to walk my bike back up! This is how learning goes I guess! Even after one night I'm stronger... and I can FEEL where my seat was! Tomorrow I will adjust it to be more comfortable! I'm excited to ride a bike but I have to admit that I find myself really poorly weighted, like I feel myself to one side over another and am drawn in that direction. As a child I had major inner-ear problems and that could be what is plaguing me still but I would rather believe that I can overcome them and ride just fine! I have the summer still to learn!
In other news, I have to report that on Saturday I met one of my favourite musicians. At all places, at a small backyard barbecue! Long story short, my boyfriend is a musician who plays with one man (he and his wife the host of this barbecue) who also plays with my favourite musician. We walked in and there he was... I was too nervous to go over and say hello. Dinner, some music (my boyfriends group played, and then this man did)... and after a bit of wine to go up and introduce myself and had a lovely chat! You have to love when small things like that happen! I've probably seen this man perform at least 12 times in the past 10 years, and most often with my Dad, my Dad who passed away just over a year ago and I would love to tell him! He must already know, however, so I will find a clip on youtube of Oscar Lopez, a Spanish guitarist whose work I adore, to share with you all:
I did sort of a quick survey of youtube, but if you are interested, Oscar Lopez has some amazing music! Please enjoy, Sparkfriends!!
Have a fabulous Tuesday!!
