Do Gadgets Help Me Lose Weight?

Saturday, July 13, 2013

Do my gadgets help me lose weight?

That’s the question one of my teammates on the Sexy ShamROCK Sheriffs asked me... cuz I doooooo love gadgets.. it made me pause and think... and YES, I believe my gadgets do help me lose weight. Here are my gadgets:

1. Fitbit... I have a very sedentary job.. and the way Fitbit helps is that it makes me AWARE of how little I move.. it allows me to set reasonable goals.. and if i’ve had “one of those days” where I sat on my butt in meetings all day then it motivates me to “do a little more” in the evening.. I’ve even found myself planning ahead and doing something active in the am to offset a day where I know I’ll be on my butt all day. I do not “count” my fitbit steps as fitness... yes, yes, they show up on my “official” fitness minutes page (the more points to give goodies!!) but, in my mind or on any challenges I participate in, I do not count them. I use the fitbit to improve my overall activity not to keep track of “purposeful” or “SWEATY” activity. Does it help me lose weight?? YES

2. I’m going to count my DEXAscan and my testing of my basal metabolic rate as part of my gadgets... and yes, it helps me lose weight because it convinces my brain that I’m on the right track (when I am) and gives me feedback as to whether what I’m doing to lose weight is actually working. So far, it’s confirmed I’m on the right path. (to read more about my repeat DEXAscan look at my blog dated 7/11/13) Does it help me lose weight? YES

3. Aria scale... mmmm I love it.. primarily because it saves me time from having to write stuff down and log it.. LOL. but do I NEED it?? nah... it syncs with my FitBit which I have tied to my Sparkpeople account... so everytime I weigh (and I weigh daily) it updates spark.. now, because of this, I’ve had to not allow my weight to post on Spark - otherwise the fluctuations would drive y’all crazy cuz I lose and gain the same pound over and over sometimes LOL...however, it is VERY accurate on it’s % of fat lost.. because it matched the DEXAscan exactly.. that was nice to find out. How it helps me lose weight is that I plot my daily weights and have gain immeasurable insight as to how my body works.. how it reacts to weight training.. or certain foods... a trip.. the daily weights for me are just another data point to monitor.. it is not THE way I gauge my success.. NO WAY.. Does it help me lose weight? Yes, in that it allows me another data point in an efficient way.. okay, it’s a stretch... but I still like it!

4. SWIMP3.. ohhhhh this is my newest gadget and I love it!!!! it’s a waterproof MP3 player that conducts sound though your cheekbones so you can listen to music while you swim.. yeah baby.. this thing is freaking AWESOME!! Does it help me lose weight?? YES!! Cuz I swim for much longer at a faster pace than when I don’t wear it.

5. Lap Counter... yep... it’s little.. fits on my finger.. and helps me keep accurate track of my laps... could I lose weight without it? yeah.. but it helps me set lap goals and meet them. Does it help me lose weight? sure.. by accurately measuring my laps so I can monitor improvement

6. Polar F7 Heartrate Monitor and my Digifit App are by far my favorite gadget... I have a long history of not wanting or liking to workout.. when I was 12 and we had to do the presidential mile, I told the teacher I had asthma and couldn’t.. yeah, I was that kid.. anyhoo.. when I started CrossFit on March 2 of this year, I thought I was dying... and it took my coach really sitting me down for “the talk” to help me realize I was not going to die.. I was able to breathe.. my heart would not explode or beat out of my chest.. that it was all NORMAL for working hard! I realized I had a warped gauge of how hard I was working.. so, for me, the heartrate monitor gives me an accurate gauge for how hard I’m working at any given time.. I know that when my HR reaches 160 I think I’m dying.. but now as it approaches and I KNOW how I’m going to feel - I can prepare my mind.. GET TOUGH.. and power through it.. It also doesn’t let me fool myself that my “walk” around the block did anything for me fitness wise.. it’s activity.. but I’m talking FITNESS.. cuz if you’re not uncomfortable you’re not changing!!

“Discomfort brings engagement and change. Discomfort means you’re doing something others are unlikely to do, because they’re hiding out in the comfortable zone.” – Seth Godin

Does it help me lose weight?? H3LL TO THE YES!! It keeps me honest about how hard I’m working by taking the “feeling” out of it...

I think that’s all my fitness gadgets... I think... Do you use a gadget that helps you lose weight?? What is it???

The SWIMP3 is neat, didn't know there was anything like that out there. I have the classic version of the fitbit that I use off and on, it is neat when I can get it to sync to my computer. lol. I am definitely a gadget girl too, my favorite is my Nike+ chip that goes with my ipod. emoticon

Ahhh, a woman after my own heart! I'm a gadget geek to the Nth degree....I measure, tabulate, track, map, and store everything.

Personally, I use the bodymedia Fit CORE armband to track calories, steps, etc. I also love the Polar F7...synchs right up to my iPhone and Digifit. I use a separate HRM with my garmin for the bike....it synchs up with a siftware program where I can map my bike rides....but I may switch to Digifit for these too.

Now if I could just gut some wi-fi antennas coming out of my brain to just transmit all this stuff directly to my iPhone, I'd be in Geek Heaven!

I have a Polar Heartbeat Monitor. I bought it quite a few years ago, but I have never used it. It has sat in my closet for so long that I was recently thinking of getting rid of it on E-bay. Now I'm an rethinking that and maybe I'll take another look at it!

You already know I have a Fitbit and love it. I've been toying with the idea of getting a heart rate monitor for a while now, and I think you just convinced me to go for it. Perhaps I'll find that some of the times that I stop running because I feel like I'm "dying," I'm not working as hard as I thought. It would be great to have that information. Also, I want an Aria very much!

Thanks for all those reviews. I have often considered getting several of those gadgets. Good to know which ones help the most, and which are your favorites.

Love gadgets as well and they add to the fun. Hadn't heard of SWIMP3, but that sounds pretty cool.

Hey, you've got some collection of gadgets...

The only one I have is the Fitbit. The reason I picked it over a plain pedometer is the sleep monitoring function. With it, I found that I'm not getting nearly as much sleep as I thought.

I find one of the drawbacks to it is that unless you are taking steps for it to count, it doesn't recognize a lot of activities. When I mow, I can spend an hour drenched in sweat and it might give me 10 minutes of "moderate activity". Last night I was out at least a half hour pulling some really stubborn weeds that I thought gave me a good workout (pant, pant, drip, drip). Maybe one minute showed on the Fitbit... And I couldn't notice if it showed and enhanced calorie burn. So I am adding at least half of the minutes I spend in such activities to my Spark tracker. I feel that way I can average the activity and not claim more that I am really entitled to.

I also find the stairs counting to be kind of iffy. Sometimes it doesn't give me the stairs I've climbed and sometimes I wonder where they all came from.

I'm not sure my Fitbit is helping me lose weight. It is certainly motivating me to get in more activity, but Spark keeps upping my calorie ranges, so when I eat within their recommended range, I think that I may be eating too much. I need to work on getting back to at least the lower end.

Enjoy your toys, I am enjoying mine.

I love gadgets! I am waiting to buy a Garmin and have thought about a fitbit or even the UK version of the Bodymedia.

I think gadgets can be very useful!

Thanks for sharing x

I love my FitBit. Mine doesn't sync with SP because it was counting every step as fitness, and it made me feel like I was cheating.

Yesterday, I worked from home and moved a total of fewer than 1000 steps between 7:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. Knowing that made me get off my butt and go for a 2-mile walk. I didn't achieve my 10,000 steps yesterday, but at least I racked up some fitness!

Thanks for your blog!

I have SVT (a type of tachycardia). I have an app on my cell phone that measures my heartrate because even my resting heartrate is typically higher than others. So, if I'm doing an intense workout like Zumba, I check it when the instructor is changing songs, or I feel like it's getting too high. My instructors know this and expect me to slow down the workout to accommodate my heart. So, my phone app is my first gadget.

My second gadget I just got Monday...my Fitbit! OMG I LOVE IT!!! I found myself pacing my living room last night just so I could get in 1500 more steps and pass another user haha. I then got amazing sleep because I was exhausted!
