Are you *skinny fat*?

With a BMI of 26.2 I thought I was only a few pounds away from a "normal weight." After some research I found out my body fat index of 30.1% means I'm not as close to being skinny as I thought.

Welcome to the world of being *skinny fat*. I encourage every one to look at the norms for body fat and compare it with your BMI.

Likewise, Some people with lots of muscle and a BMI that is considered overweight can actuly fall into the "normal" category due to a low body fat %.

Ahhhhhh the hidden loopholes of weight loss.

    Thanks for all the response everyone. Yes BMI might be how Drs. Determine if we are overweight or not but BMI is defiantly not as accurate as some believe or something we should stress about!!

    Yes, I have that problem of skinny fat. Because I am not able to strength train adequately, being limited to 5 lbs lifting with my artificial elbows, my body fat % is high at 34 even though I can't afford to drop any more weight without fearing bone loss. Lousy problem. If I do too much cardio without ST, it does promote bone loss. They figure that is why my bone density was so bad, because I worked out lots to lose the weight, but it was all cardio.

    Best quote ever regarding BMI (From Nerd Fitness):
'Your BMI has absolutely NOTHING to do with your body composition It only factors in your height and weight. It will give you the same reading if you're made of 180 pounds of pure muscle, or 180 pounds of pure Cheetos.'

My current body fat puts me in the "Acceptable" category even though my BMI has me in the "Overweight" category.

    be careful with BMI index:) I am now close to my skinniest again thanks to exercising and proper diet, but my muscle mass is heavy and my BMI shows that I am almost obese:) my friend who is a personal trainer is also fit and slim but muscled and his BMI is 31.0 so he is obese due to BMI index... I am no longer looking at it because it is not reliable!:) and on your picture you look way fit love;) stay positive!
