Accountability Team

Friday, July 12, 2013

I have thought about this for awhile, and then, a little bit longer. I do appreciate all the great things about Sparkpeople; the great tools, the great resources, the great people. I appreciate the teams I have been on as they have introduced me to many amazing people.

When I first joined Spark I was keen and eager and joined multiple teams, unfortunately over the years my team list has dwindled as I found many teams did not have great participation and other teams had a focus that had little or nothing to do with health and fitness. While discussions about Lawn Fertilizer or Professional Boccee may have a place here on Sparkpeople, I have shied away from those teams as I want my Sparkpeople adventure to be about Health and Fitness. Conversely, there are also great Challenge teams out there. They encourage health, fitness and accountability but sadly sometimes the teams are too big, the duration too long or sometimes the challenge is just too onerous.

So I have an idea, if anyone is interested...

I would like to ceate an Accountability Team. A small team of no more than 8-10 people with a focus on health, fitness and reaching our goals. It is not about parenting, gardening, backgammon or lawn furniture. It is about active living and healthy eating. It is also about supporting each other and becoming accountable to each other.

Requirements are simple...

You must report to the team daily to let us know what you did to be active that day or the day prior, with some feedback on your successes, struggles or questions. If you did not workout because it was a rest day simply let us know.

You must let us know what your calorie count for the day is. Apparently eating in range helps in attaining or maintaing a desirable weight.

You have to be there for the team, that means you share your activity but you also support others through encouragement, praise, or answering questions. That is part of the reason for the small team, with too many people, some people get lost in the crowd.

If you fall off the map for more than two days, without notice, you must be willing to receive Sparkmail, comments on your Sparkpage, or Goodies asking what has happened. If you notice someone on the team is missing you get to encourage them in positive ways through Sparkmail, Sparkpage comments or Goodies. Remember, the encouragement must be positive.

This team is not permanent. After one month it will disappear. The reasons for this are simple, people get busy and cannot always recommit. Sometimes people move on to new adventures. If you do not participate, probably because you are too busy as life does get in the way, you won't need to join in the next new accountability team.

The team will be renewed after four weeks so some may choose to drop away and others to come aboard. For returning members it is a time to recommit and maybe a chance to connect with new team members who have new ideas.

So, let me know what you think. If you have any questions let me know, if you have suggestions tell me, but most of all, if you are interested just reply to this blog or send me a Sparkmail.

Sparkpeople has even written an article about this...

How is the accountability team going? I was off the grid, but gosh, it is a great idea.... are you still open to doing this? I'm game.

Oh my goodness I hope this has been successful as it sounds awesome. I get tired of the sidetracking that happens on some teams. I belong to a woo hoo team that is very positve and affirms healthy decisions which is basically what you are talking about. I love it. Good luck Andy!

    Hi Andy
I hope this team got up and running. I think it was a great idea and great accountability!
Awesome job with getting the ball rolling.

I love this. If you got the team up and running and I can still join, let me know. I need to be held accountable. I think we do have to be careful about not judging others. I found that on another team and, as you know, that does not help.

emoticon idea. A very simple concept. We sometimes become distracted from the real purpose we are here. To lose weight & become healthy in the process. Count me in. Linda

    Hi Andy,
I am interested. I see over 30 people responded already so let me know. Plus, I see you posted this a week ago. Or I could be put on your "waiting list" for next month. It's a great idea.

I'm in, Andy, so send me an invite, I'd love to join you. Although, I must admit, talking about backgammon could be fabulous emoticon

Sounds like a fabulous idea, Andy! I see you have lots of support for this concept already. I'd be interested in a round after summer. Right now I'm finding BLC keeping me busy and accountable enough for the summer months. Keep us posted on your team and future rounds.

This sounds wonderful Andy. I definitely need to be more accountable. I noticed you have 12 takers right now but I'm available when you'll have me.

Great idea Andy...in the midst of selling and moving house right now but could use some extra accountability and support...let me know if you get this team started and would like some leadership help. Sending invites every month might be a bit daunting...maybe think about every 2 month recommits??

Yes, I'd love to give it a try. I sure do accountability. Let me know if you have room for me. I'll do my best.

p..s. I think the suggestion of a private team is a good idea. Doesn't feel so bad to "fess up if we know the whole world isn't looking! Just our support system!

Andy, this is a wonderful idea and I'm pleased to notice you have several takers. I'm disappointed that I am not currently able to consider this group.

Sometimes I have just enough minutes to log food and spin the wheel. Other times, though, I can poke around and will be watching for your blog describing how "The Accountability Group" is getting along.

I'd love to join if there's room--I need the accountability and for someone to chase me down if I lose track emoticon

Let me know what I need to do and I'm in!

I've currently set a goal of "no cheat meals or days for 1 month", so this team would definitely help to keep me on track! I'm on Day 3 and going strong--lots of cravings, but I'm fighting and could use the encouragement...

I'm ready to jump start my weight loss again!

I'm in a "rest" phase now after my "100 days until summer" challenge (a challenge I created and documented for myself) Does not mean a "free for all", just much less time to Spark online and much more 'sparking' off line!!

(been several days since I checked in...)

I love the idea of small teams! Do you intend to start now or in August?

Will keep it in mind and check back....if you make the team private, be sure to blog about it!

I think this is a great idea, and I think you've hit the nail on the head with the issues you've mentioned. Unfortunately I won't be able to join the team now, as I'm in the middle of some transitions in my life at the present. Some of the things I'm dealing with are taking longer to take care of, and using more energy than I thought they would. I definitely want to keep in touch about what's going on, though.

Great idea Andy! Would love to join in the future. I am presently recovering from a crushed vertebrae so I won't be active for awhile.

While I can't participate right now, I find it inspiring to read about what others do to include exercise and healthy eating into their daily lives. I also like to hear how others deal with the bumps in the road we face when trying to live a healthier life.

I like the way you approach your path to a healthier life Andy, so keep posting.
