Happy Birthday To My Oldest Son!

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

I wasn't feeling very motivated to workout this morning. I didn't have a very good night...there were storms, and my dog is so nervous whenever there is thunder. She kept me up for most of the night with her whining and howling, so I was really exhausted this morning. But I'm proud to say that I did the 30 Day Shred anyway! Today was day 12 of the workout, and my second day on level two!

Today is also my oldest son's birthday. He is 29. Just saying that makes me feel so old! How can I be 52 when I still feel like I'm in my 30's? And how did my son grow up so darned fast?

I have two sons, and we are very close. When they were young, tragedy struck. Their father was killed by a drunk driver. I was a frightened 32 year old widow with two sad, confused little boys to raise. My oldest son became very angry at the world, and as he grew into his teen years, his behavior started to go downhill. He began getting into trouble at school, and he started talking back to me. I knew he was still grieving for his father, so I tried to be understanding and loving, but it was a very difficult time. We had a few rough years there, and my son acted like he couldn't stand me. It was heartbreaking for me. On his 18th birthday, he packed up and moved out.

For the next few years, we hardly spoke, even though I saw him several times a week because he got a job working at the same place where my new husband worked. I just gave him his space and kept him in my prayers. It took a while, but slowly as he matured, our relationship improved. He went back to his faith, and he even apologized to me for how he had treated me.

Our relationship now is just what I always wanted. We don't see each other very often anymore, because he has a job now where he works the overnight shift, so he sleeps during the day. But we email each other often, and get together when we can. I am so proud of the young man he has become.

Happy birthday to my dear, oldest son. I love you and I wish you all the very best this year, and always!

wow Pixie, you (and your sons) have certainly been through a lot. But, it is obvious that you are very resilient to be where you are now! You seem to have a mature perspective on your life events and are not letting them hold you back. That's truly an inspiration to us all!
I'm so glad the relationship with your son has turned around. I have a hunch that it's more difficult for a mother to have a close relationship with a son over a daughter, in general. Guys are just built differently emotionally and socially!
Thank you for your candor and honesty. You give me inspiration!!!!

I love your courage! I've always believed a child's (no matter what age) birthday really belongs to the mother.

It's a blessing to know you!

Hi Pixie--- How very difficult your life has been at times. It is nice to hear that your relationship with your son is now mended. Happy birthday to him!

My sister was widowed with two little boys. It was very hard---and she did not recover. The boys are fine men now, but life was very much turmoil when they were children.

You can be very proud of yourself-- proud that you did not allow tragedy to defeat you.

Bless you, Pixie, for always inspiring Sparkpeople to achieve goals.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm so sorry for the loss of your first husband, and all you had to go through at that time, but so happy you have found happiness again and that your son has come around and realizes just how much you love him no matter what, and I hope you get to celebrate his birthday with him and that it will be special for you both.

Happy birthday to your son, and you too! (It is the day you gave birth to him, so it's a celebration for you too!)

Oh my goodness, you're not old!!! I'm 60 but I still feel like I'm 19!!! Why 19 I don't know, but that's what came out of my mouth, when somebody asked me how old I felt.

emoticon You stuck with your workout!!! You know that you probably burned more calories today, as you didn't have adequate rest. I don't know if that's true, but I know that when I don't have adequate rest, and go walking, I'm working harder at it, as I feel like I'm sluffing off.

emoticon to your son!!! It's pretty amazing, watching your children grow up and how they change through out their lives. Your son has come full circle, and when you said that he returned to his faith, I just thought of the scripture, "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

I'm just really amazed that you got up this morning and tackled that 30 Day Shred!!! My hat is off to you young lady!!! BRAVO!!!

Bless your heart! Happy birthday to #1 son and to ME, my birthday is today as well. You've been through a lot, and I'm glad #1 son is finally doing OK. Sometimes it takes awhile for kids to work through what happened to them as children.

Have you ever thought of getting your dog a Thundershirt? I hear they work wonders.
