DOMS - to gym or not to gym.

Friday, July 12, 2013

I'm really REALLY conflicted.

My legs are SUPER sore from working with my trainer on them on Wednesday. (I did do Zumba yesterday but you know, the D in DOMS was in effect haha)

I'm on the fence if I should give myself an unscheduled extra rest-day (which is usually Sunday) because man, my hamstrings are SUPER tight... like "Have you been riding a horse??" tight.

OR - if I should just keep on keeping on and push my normal Friday Zumba class out today, because getting the blood flowing is good, and although we obviously use our legs a lot dancing it's not like it's 'strength training' using weights with them.

I really really hate to take an extra day off, I'm finally seeing progress after a long time of plateau/gaining.

But my legs ARE very achy.

I just cant figure if its "I'm gonna injure myself overtraining" achy or "Just move them around and they will heal faster" achy.

Really conflicted, and really frustrated! Though I'm HAPPY they ache because that means i've worked them good, I don't want it to mess my mojo while i'm on a hot-streak!

I agree that you ought to perform a less intense type of cardio workout, walking on the treadmill, some yoga, etc. Besides once you get started you certainly will feel much better....

With DOMS, when I was really planning on exercising....I do...but MUCH easier than normal. Perhaps a 20 minute walk on the treadmill, at an escalating pace at no incline. It's exercise (yay!) and more than likely will help ease the ache of the DOMS. But you know you.... listen to your body above what anyone else has to say!

It sounds like you know the difference between regular DOMS and I can't sit down without holding onto something DOMS. If you are on the fence (and you know it isn't because you just don't want to go) then make it a rest day. If it is regular DOMS and you are not feeling like going - go anyway.

Have you tried stretching, yoga, or Pilates? There are some great videos out there for when you are on a hot streak and still want to exercise, but be kinder to your body.

I read today a spark passage, that said not to over work your self, In so many words I'm saying do want you can, It's great to push your self to the limit but know your limit, If your going hard 4 to 5 times per week or harder It's ok to take off a day or two off If needed, but If you can do it go for it, but listen to your body Intense workouts take lots of energy, so If you feel like It's to much then slow down and pick back up.

I don't know your exercise regimen but try and mix It up, If your using a trainer chances are there pushing you to the max, so I would not do more than one two dance class per week, I'm just saying but do what you can don't get hospitalize trying. emoticon
