On Reading an Obituary

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Yesterday I read an obituary of a former co-worker who passed away a couple of days ago. As I was reading, it struck me that Judy had been preceded in death by both parents and all six of her siblings. How sad that she had to endure the passing of all her siblings.

I'm the oldest of nine. I lost one brother (and his wife) in an auto accident 13 years ago. And I have a sister under hospice care right now, in the final stages of brain cancer. And I lost both my husband and my mother in 2011, exactly six months apart, as well as six other family members in a short period of time. In addition, my cousin who is my closest friend, has terminal kidney cancer. I've struggled to keep my sanity! I can't imagine losing ALL my siblings to death.

I was reminded today of my thoughts after the death of my grandma in 1965, when I was 15 years old. It was the first family death that I had endured, and the loss was so painful. I recall praying that God would take me before any of the rest of my family so I wouldn't have to go through that pain again. Well, obviously, he didn't. I'm guessing that He has more for me to do before I leave this earth.

I've heard some of the old timers talk about how lonely it is at their advanced age. Having lost most or all of their friends to death, as well as most or all of their siblings, I'm sure it was very lonely. I'm thankful to still have lots of siblings alive, and I shall make it a point to stay in touch with them more regularly.

My goal, though, is to get healthy so that I can live a long and active life! SparkPeople is certainly a great tool to use for that goal. And I'm blessed to have so many friends, far and near, that support me in my journey.

My quick math makes you 63 or there about. My dad will be 80 and my mom just turned 76 last Sunday. You're still rather young but when it's time there will be nothing you can do to change fait. So live well and stay healthy. God bless you and your family.
