Thinking Aloud about Zumba

Tuesday, July 09, 2013

Zumba has been my entry into the world of movement. Over two years I have gone from marching in place for much of the hour to helping to lead a few songs each hour in addition to dancing the rest of the hour. I've been invited to take Zumba instructor classes but I haven't because while I dance the whole hour, I am still modifying many moves.

Tonight four of us, 1 longterm Zumba instructor, two new instructors and me as a helper, taught the class for the regular instructor who got very ill right before class. I helped to lead 3 songs. After class, a couple of long time participants came up to me. They told me that they had a difficult time following the different instructors, esp. the new instructors. But they were glad when I got up because they could follow my moves clearly. I work very hard on making my moves exaggerated and well-telegraphed so that made me feel very good!

I hope that I could get a good handle on my health problems and build up my stamina and muscles so that I could feel good about spending the money on actual training. Until then, I'll help out as I can and will keep learning what I can.

Helping to lead some songs for Zumba must have been very rewarding for you, and I commend you for taking that step. It is an inspiration that a great spark friend who deals with a lot of pain and fatigue, took on the challenge of leading a group. Keep sparking in helping when you can---you did good.

It's a learning process. I haven't tried to do zumba yet because I tried to do a video on and failed miserably. I think the local classes closed. I didn't have the transportation to get there anyway because it was at night and I can't drive at night. I'm so glad you were able to help lead. You made it easier for some members of the class. You should be very happy and proud about that. Bravo!
