Smile!

Tuesday, July 09, 2013

I work in downtown Jacksonville. I typically walk to lunch and/or breakfast. The best part for me is that there are almost no screaming children. I absolutely do not understand unruly children. I also don't understand parents who are perfectly fine with letting their children being so ridiculously loud!

Anyway, walking around downtown is so nice because there are so many different types of people. The most amazing thing to me is that there are actually people who will either not even look at others on the street, or refuse to return a smile. I mean really, what is so absolutely terrible about your life that you absolutely cannot return a simple smile? It is uplifting to see others smile. It is also much easier to smile than to think about all the stress you have going on in your life. So next time you're passing a stranger on the street, smile and see what happens. You just might be surprised. emoticon

I grew up in a small city and everyone is all smiles and nice to each other. Here, in a large metropolitan area, we have all sorts of people with different cultures and backgrounds. I think we mostly here in the western states are all smiles and love to say 'hi'. Others would like to get to know you before smiling back. It doesn't mean they're grumpy it's just who they are and they're lives could be much happier.

Jolene, I need your dentist's name. Hehe! emoticon

Sometimes when I'm walking I get into my own little zone and don't pay attention to others. Today I will be sure to look up and smile!

I've only eaten downtown a time or two during the week and that was a long time ago but I would agree about the absence of kids. I think some of that eye avoidance may be from the stranger danger fear that we are taught and are teaching our kids. Used to be a stranger was just a friend you hadn't met yet.

I agree. I think it is so rude not to respond to a smile.

You would love Santa Cruz. All of the locals will smile and even strike up a conversation with you right on the street. I also dislike screaming children.
