Today, I joined Spark People after making a bet with my husband that if I lose 25 lbs. we will get a swimming pool. I actually have much more than 25 lbs. to lose. But, 25 lbs. is a good start. With the help of the Spark People community, I am going to do it. I just need to keep telling myself: I can do it. I can do it. I CAN DO IT!

Well, it's April 2014 and I still haven't lost that 25 lbs. I haven't given up on that goal. I did, however, give up on the notion of getting a swimming pool for our back yard.
After a lot of research, we determined that it is too expensive. We are underwater on our mortgage (our house isn't worth what we owe) like most of the homeowners in the country. A pool would not add value to our house. I hate it when we get practical. Practical smactical!!!
I was excited about the romantic idea of having our very own pool. Now, I'm just excited about getting healthy. I'm on my way!

It's been an interesting couple of months since I've started my latest weight loss and healthy living journey with you folks. The path has been bumpy with ups and downs and highs and lows. Overall, it's been a very positive experience with more highs than lows, more ups than downs.
I've learned a lot on this trip and I'm still learning. I am learning how to let things go that would normally upset me and cause an over eating reaction. I'm learning to go easy on myself when I do over eat. I am learning to enjoy life and to love myself, both of which have been difficult to do in the past.
The bet with my husband that sparked this journey was for me to lose 25 pounds, then we will get a swimming pool. I have lost just over 18 pounds in two months. That is extraordinary to me. That last 7 pounds could be a challenge to lose as my momentum has fizzled a bit, but I am going to do it, dag nabbit!
When I've reached that 25 lb. goal, I will shoot for another 10 lb. loss and then continue on with 10 lb. increments until I've reached my ideal weight. I'm not sure what that should be. I am 5' 3" tall. I would love to be in the 130's or 140's, but if I can reach the 150's I would be thrilled, excited, overjoyed.
A pool in our back yard might not be in my future because of the practicality of it all and the expense. But, that's okay. How did that song go? "Que sera sera, what ever will be will be, the future's not ours to see. . .". We shall see what the future holds for me. Stay tuned. . .

Well, it doesn't look as though I am going to get that swimming pool this year, or ever. It's getting very late in the season and I still haven't reached my 25 lb. weight loss goal. That's okay. I will stick to my goals anyway.
Besides not meeting my goals, and perhaps more importantly, it appears that after getting some quotes on a pool it is something that we might not be able to afford after all. And, it's not very practical (practical smactical) given the fact that we need so many repairs on our house, our money pit, which is not worth what we owe on our mortgage. And, a pool does not add value to your house. Oh, jeez....this is depressing. It was much more fun thinking of getting that swimming pool. I guess it's back to the old blow up pool for me! LOL
Yesterday, I looked into taking a water exercise class through the local parks and recreation program. They offer several water classes including deep water exercise, water aerobics, and aqua Zumba. I tried the "land" Zumba (loads of fun) and I think that is a part of what killed my knees -- that and trying to play golf with my husband.
Anyway, the local pool is much more affordable than an actual swimming pool, at home, in private, in your own back yard. :-( And, they offer your first class for free so you can try it before signing up and spending the cash. That's a great idea. I can't tell you how many times I've signed up for exercise classes and stopped going after a few weeks.
My first "Deep Water Exercise" class begins on September 3rd. If it's good, I will sign up to go twice a week.

I am 11.8 pounds away from my initial loss of 25 pounds. I've lost 13 lbs. since July 8th and it feels amazing! That extra 13 lbs. was like carrying around a large bowling ball. I have a long, long way to go to get down to a truly healthy weight. But, I'm on the right track.
My goal of getting that swimming pool is within reach. Our swimming season is nearly over. So, when I reach that initial 25 lb. loss, I'm going to make arrangements for a pool to be installed first thing in the spring.

I am already seeing the benefits of being a member of SP. I love that we're all in the same boat, so to speak, and that there is a wealth of knowledge and information to help us along our journey. In fact, I probably spent way too much time exploring the site yesterday, my first day on SP. How do you budget your time? I suppose once you're familiar with the site, you can hit your favs, grab a new recipe, log your progress and be done. Ahhhh, if only it were that simple!
