I was having trouble finding places to camp in Wisconsin between Whitewater and Stevens Point for our first self-supported bicycle tour next week. I was about to give up and almost bought Adventure Cycling Association maps for a ride around the upper part of Lake Michigan. After calculating the milage (785 miles) approximately, and thinking we would do about 50 miles a day...that plan would have taken two weeks to bicycle. While I wouldn't mind doing a two week tour as part of our preparation for our big trip, I didn't want to make it our first tour.
We went back to the drawing board and did some more research on camping. Hubby found a National Geographic atlas on Amazon that is for recreational camping etc in Wisconsin complete with very detailed maps. Between that book and knowing there are hotels along the way, we now feel much more confident about doing our original ride from Whitewater to Stevens Point and back. It's about a 300 miles and with a day off to spend getting our bike serviced at the Hostel Shoppe in Stevens Point, the trip should take about a week. We plan on beginning the ride on Sunday. It should be a manageable shake down ride for us.
More to come!!!!
