6 Weeks Post TKR

Wow, 6 weeks already! Hard to believe it's been that long. I had a great session at PT today. They have increased all my reps on my exercises, added weights to some of them, and given me new exercises to increase flexibility. I think on Thursday they are going to measure my progress. I know I am getting stronger. I have been walking about a mile a day, doing my exercises, and have started swimming almost daily. Yesterday the pool got crowded, so I switched to the lap lanes and swam laps. I mostly do a kind of lopsided breast stroke - my knee doesn't always cooperate with what I want it to do, but I think the water is really helping. And swimming gives me a gentle all over workout. I've noticed that on days when I swim, I can SLEEP! It's amazing to go to bed and actually sleep for 3-4 hours at a time.
I'm still having problems with sitting. I went to the movies with my daughter and friends last Friday, and despite getting up and walking around a couple of times, I had a lot of swelling. I iced it when I got home, but still had swelling the next day. Not much I can do about it, except keep elevating and using ice. I am proud of the exercise I'm doing - I can feel myself getting stronger every day.

    Very few people realize that sitting is a big issue, but to this day, I cannot stay sitting for a long period of time.

    Plan your time carefully, do what feels best in combination with what your medical team tells you. This will pass and you will feel amazing before you know it.

    That swelling should start to diminish gradually. I think it took me 12 weeks for it to disappear . . . mostly! Hang in there. Sounds like you're doing well.

    I had difficulty sitting also. The knee gets stiff. BUT on the other hand, that's a good thing, because you WANT to get up at least once/hr. to prevent problems.

    Hang in there. HUGS It will all be worth it.
