There was a great quote in the Best of Sparkpeople email on Tuesday morning;

Paul the SparkPeople programmer says:
"There is no one-size-fits all solution for anything in life—certainly not for fitness and nutrition. Keep trying to find what works for you!"

That quote is so true! We are all individuals, and what works for me might not work for you...and vice versa. We all need to find our own way to go. As long as it is healthy, there isn't really a wrong way to lose weight and get fit.

For example...exercise. There are lots different types of exercise and workouts available. I enjoy hearing what others have had success with, and I love to try new things. Sometimes though, I will try an exercise that someone else has raved about, only to find that I personally just do NOT like it. I gave Zumba a shot, and Walk Away the Pounds, too. But neither one really appealed to me. There was nothing wrong with those workouts. I just didn't find them to be my cup of tea. So instead of forcing myself to do them anyway, I just moved on and tried other things.

I discovered that I like kickboxing well enough...but that I liked DDP Yoga, kettlebells, Pilates and stability ball workouts even better! And because I like these workouts, I am more motivated to do them than I would be to do a workout that I don't like. There is such a huge variety of workouts out there, so why force yourself to do something that doesn't appeal to you? It makes no sense to try to be a square peg in a round hole, so to speak.

There are also a LOT of different eating plans and weight loss programs out there...Weight Watchers, TOPS, etc. Again, as long as it is healthy, there is no wrong way to eat. My own eating plan is simple calorie counting, and trying to eat as healthy as possible. For me, eating as healthy as possible means eating lots of fruits and vegetables, tofu and beans for protein....and no meat or processed food. Its what works for me!

Another thing that works for me is not weighing myself. I would much rather stay off the scale and just focus on non-scale victories, such as the fit of my clothes or my endurance during workouts. I don't even own a scale, although I could weigh myself on my Wii Fit if I wanted to.

I'm not anti-scale, though. I believe the scale is a useful tool. Its just one that I prefer not to use. In the past, the scale would be a real motivation wrecker and self esteem killer for me. I would put too much emphasis on the numbers. I was so worried about those pounds and ounces, I never took the time to notice my progress in other ways. I was too busy beating myself up for "only" losing a pound. A bad weigh in would affect me for days, and sometimes push me into a binge. A bad weigh in would make me feel like a bad person...ugly, unworthy and like a failure.

But I know that some people need the scale, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. If you're someone who needs (or likes) to weigh in, then go for it! My only caution regarding the scale is to not let it destroy your self esteem. It really is just a number. If you are eating right and working out...if you are doing all you can to be healthy...then you are on the right track. Look for non-scale victories, and appreciate your body. Love yourself no matter what the number on the scale says!

Have a healthy day! Keep doing what works for you. And if you haven't found what works for you yet, keep looking! Be open to new things...and don't ever feel like you have to do what anyone else is doing. You know YOU the best. So don't try to be a square peg in a round hole!

    That is so true. There is so much out there - no need to stick with something you don't like. I LOVE the "you can't outrun your fork" quote. In my case it's "you can't outrun your pantry"
