Random musing

Tuesday, July 09, 2013

Weird thing in Korea. I asked my student "What is your least favorite food?"
He answered: "My least favorite food is paprika."

I thought, wow, that is an incredibly unusual least favorite food...actually, it's not a food, it's a spice, that's why it's so unusual for an English-speaker to answer that question in that way.

It was even more weird because they don't really use spices here, most of my students don't know what basil, or oregano or even parsley is. So I asked him to draw me a picture. Imagine my surprise when he drew a bell pepper. emoticon And then...then I discovered the true depth of my ignorance. Paprika is a spice made from dried peppers. Go figure.

Now, the true nature of my musing comes forth...both Paprika and chili powder are made from dried pepper....why do they taste so different?

I know it's not the easy answer of 'paprika uses bell peppers while chili uses chili peppers.' Nope, they BOTH use chili peppers...so why do they taste different. *confused*

Sorry don't know for sure why they tastes different. Perhaps it is in the way they are processed? emoticon
