I'm leaving tomorrow for a retreat near Ft Myers at Mother of God House of Prayer (see website for pics). It's about a half mile back from the Caloosahatchee River, and I am so looking forward to having the large house to myself. I'm taking clay, water colors, and my everlasting cross stitch tablecloth. Everlasting because it's huge, and i just may finish it before I die. No other agenda except for an excursion to the farmers market and to Ft Myers Friends Meeting.
I will fix my own meals in the beautiful large kitchen. It's spacious and light, and preparing food in it becomes very much part of retreat. One of the first things I do will be to bake bread.
This place was a refuge after I was diagnosed with cancer in 2006. The Sister of St Joseph who is the director listened and prayed with me and couldn't have offered better support. I will meet daily with her on this retreat; different and simpler issues this time, thanks be.
What do I want from the time I will spend there? Peace, quiet, time for meditation, consideration of how to bring more of retreat-mind into everyday life when I go back to work in August....
Electronic devices are sometimes discouraged at retreat houses, but I think that's a passé issue. My iPad and Nook lighten my book load, and I do want to continue tracking nutrition and fitness. It works if you limit unnecessary communications and don't let it become a distraction.
