What a weekend!!!

It never fails that I can see God's great sense of humor and receive his many blessings!!!

Ken and I went to visit my dear sister in Ohio yesterday...planning to spend the day and possibly the night. I was experiencing some pain in my right thumb. While helping her fix salads for a late lunch, the pain in my thumb was getting worse...but nothing I couldn't handle. I blamed it on the storm moving in and possibly getting some arthritis. We had a great visit. Ken started having pains in his legs and didn't have his pain medication with him...caught him by surprise! So we cut our visit short and came home. We were able to stop and buy some fresh fruit and veggies including corn on the cob. YUMMY!!!

I had a terrible night as my entire thumb side of my hand started throbbing and woke me. The throbbing continued throughout the night. Nothing helped it...tried elevating it and even that didn't help. Finally just got up. Ken was still sleeping and I let him as he really needed his rest too! When he woke I told him I probably needed to go to the ER and how my thumb and hand were feeling. He was upset that I waited...he thought I should have waken him. Not happening!

The ER x-rayed it and didn't see anything broken. She then asked if I had gout. I really thought I might have a while back, but my regular doctor said no. When she asked if I had fallen or done anything to hurt it, Ken said I might have hurt it on Thursday morning when I tried to open a jar of salsa. He even had difficulty opening it. The doctor decided after pushing and squeezing on it again, that I had a severe sprain of the right thumb...which I probably did while trying to open the salsa. She immediately ordered and put on an immobilizer splint and said that I would have to wear it for at least four to six weeks. If it doesn't heal right, I may need surgery to repair it. I have found it amazing the number of things we use both hands for. My bigger problem is that I am right handed!!! Imagine that and the difficulty doing things we have to do. Sure is keeping life interesting. lol!!!

I am having difficulty typing and can only use my left hand. UGH!!! Having some intense pain and only Tylenol to take. My doctor doesn't believe in giving pain meds to women as we were made to endure childbirth. Only I could do this trying to open a jar. LOL!!! Praise The Lord that it isn't broken and it could be worse. It was only last year that I broke my middle finger on my right hand while sleeping in a queen-size bed alone. Again I have been blessed.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and will have a super week ahead. ENJOY whatever life brings your way!!! Be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and give them a great big hug!!! We are never promised tomorrow and need to take advantage of every day!!!
Blessings, love and hugs,
Helen

Sorry that you had to cut your visit short. Also sorry about your thumb. It's funny that we don't realize how much we use our thumb until we don't have it to use. Hope the pain subsides and that you heal soon. Stay away from salsa jars!!!!!

hugs....Mary Anne

Helen, sorry to read about your thumb issues. When I broke my right shoulder (which still pains me after 16 months), I commented to the doctor at the walk-in clinic that it always seems that I injure my right side. He told me that we use our dominant side much more (duh, Mauri!) and so it is more prone to injury. Made sense and I wondered why I didn't figure that out on my own. :) I am just going to say that I agree with Linda's comments. I used to not like to take pain meds until a priest friend of mine told me that researchers use their God-given talents to find and develop these drugs. It's okay to use them, just not excessively. I would tell your doctor that...or find a doctor that will give you two or three pain pills to ease some of it. Linda, again, is right that pain wreaks havoc on our bodies, particularly our immune systems, leaving us vulnerable to other issues.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox, too. :)

Hope it's better by now. Blessings...

So sorry you and Ken had this pain and had to cut your visit in Ohio short :(( I would be deep sixing this dinosaur of a Dr. if I were you. There is no reason to be suffering, honestly. There are good pain medications out there and its only temporary! Being in pain is so damaging to your mental well being and health. Being unable to sleep or get comfortable, the stress can cause other problems for your system. Modern treatments always ensure they can keep a patient as comfortable as possible to promote rest and fast healing! Okay, I will hobble off my soapbox now. I will be seeing my family Dr., who does believe in pain control and if she is unable to find me something, will refer me to someone who can help!
Hoping you both feel better soon, but sadly, sprains are so very slow to recover :( You are in my thoughts and wishes for a faster recovery then the norm..

My dear, I am so sorry to hear you've sprained your thumb! That is really incredibly painful, actually probably more painful than a bone break. Take care of yourself.

I love salsa but there are some brands I will not buy anymore because the top is consistently too difficult to get off! OY

HUGS and blessings, sweetie. Heal quickly.

It brings home the point that when one member suffers, the whole body suffers. In the body of Christ, we ALL matter, no matter how "insignificant" we may think we are!

Sorry to hear of your injury - hope it feels better soon. It's very inconvenient, though, so I'm sure it will be quite a struggle to start off with.

(HUGS) It never ceases to amaze me how doing something ordinary can result in an injury. It also never ceases to amaze me how stupid and unkind some doctors are.

Hope you feel better soon.

Well, I do have to say that I would be looking for a new doctor if mine didn't believe in giving pain meds to women.

I am praying for you!
