Serene Sunday, today...

Sunday, July 07, 2013

The best laid plans...as they say. Had begun a blog yesterday morning and John arrived about 7:20 AM...so that was the end of being on the computer. I'm trying to be more cognizant that we don't spend a lot of time together. John doesn't go out on weeknights, usually, and I have such a crazy work schedule. When I'm not working on a weekend and he is here, I feel...and want...to spend the time with him. Yesterday I did have to leave for a few hours to attend a 6 yo's birthday party. Otherwise we had a lovely day and today we are heading out for just a bit.

John does not do well in the heat and humidity, and since menopause, neither do I. Both of us have tempers on the edge because of being uncomfortable so I tiptoe since I'm better at controlling it. He just gets uncommunicative. It's difficult to not take it personally...but I'm getting better at that after 22 years of being "together." Not sure what we are doing...so I'll be surprised!

Now that I've finally gotten paid by my part-time job, I was able to buy lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Between posting, reading, and my two daily games at Pogo, I am washing fruits, then combining them into a fruit salad for the week - 2 kinds of grapes, blueberries, strawberries. Yum. Can't decide if I feel like pitting cherries to add or will keep them for snacks. I also have a watermelon to cut up. I will add it to the fruit salad as I scoop it out. I fear the melon may make it too watery. So excited about that.

My other creation will be a Greek village salad. Because I have an allergy to lettuces, it is difficult to order salads when I'm out. There is a pizzeria in my town owned by folks from Greece. They have a traditional Greek salad, which they tell me has no lettuces. It's tomatoes, peppers, onions, feta, Greek olives, and cucumbers with a balsamic vinaigrette. Oops...forgot the feta so will stop on the way home today. That will make a healthy lunch or dinner in this heat.

Lastly, I bought stuff to make a corn avocado salsa that a friend brought to the 4th of July cookout. Corn, avocado, onion and a lemon-olive oil dressing. I'm going to add tomato (what's salsa without tomatoes???) & black beans, I think. The plan is it will be a side dish to sandwiches this week.

It takes so little for me to get excited!! This time it's food - but HEALTHY food. Yay!

*SPARK* RESTART:
1. Visited 2 of my 3 teams; will visit the other next.
2. Blogged - you're reading it...still...maybe...
3. Caught up with tracking yesterday's food & today's breakfast...The analysis keeps crashing so will try later

BLESSINGS:
1. Gracie is eating & drinking again. Yay! Katie, who seems to like this weather, who is playful today
2. Another day to spend time with John
3. Good foods from Mother Earth
4. The ability to purchase healthy foods
5. Reconnecting with family members & acquaintances of yore
6. Survived the birthday party
7. G-d, Who knows the reason for this crazy weather and just isn't telling

Glad you and John could spend some time together. Your fresh fruit for your salad sounds yummy. That tickled me what you said about Battle Creek and Tony the Tiger, Snap, Crackle and Pop and the Rooster. I remember going on a field trip there with one of my kids when they were in grade school, our SIL works there now and loves his job. We have free summer concerts starting this evening and then every Thursday through August. Margaret and I are going this evening. Hope your Thursday is a good one.

Hugs,
Shirl

I made a copy of your salad for our dinner yesterday too! Tomatoes, onions, cucumber, thin sliced carrots, feta and balsamic vinegar...oh so good! I also made a wonderful fruit drink. I cut up watermelon, some strawberries and put in my blender with lemonade frozen concentrate. Oh my gosh was it good. You can add sparkling water to it also if you find it too concentrated. All healthy and so yummy for a hot day.

Have a great day today,
Hugs,
Wanda

So glad to hear that you finally were paid for your part-time job. That must really help (I know it would really help me!). The fruit and wonderful food all sounds delicious. For me, I just need some time on the weekend to be able to get healthy groceries and then to do some food prep for the week ahead. If I do that, I eat so much healthier than if I didn't. Hope your day with John was a good one!

I LOVE fruit. I'm getting to the point where, if you offered me a choice between fresh fruit and a decadent dessert, I'd choose the fruit. I'm so happy you've got fresh foods in the house. It makes such a difference! I bought a juicer this weekend - Nutribullet, actually - so I'm all excited about fresh fruits and vegetables too.
