Three years with Spark People

Wednesday was my 3rd year Sparkversary. What have I learned in those three years? I mean, surely, I've learned something. Haven't I?

I've learned that "portion" doesn't just mean how much you put on your plate. Or what a restaurant serves you. There really are set "portions" for all foods.....3 ounces of meat.....1/2 cup of rice or pasta.....8 ounces of milk.....etc. OK, I get it. A quarter pounder with cheese & fries is NOT one portion of food.

Our bodies need water! After all, our body is 60-70% water. Without enough water intake, our bodies become dehydrated. It flushes out waste & toxins, transports nutrients our bodies need, helps tone the skin, aids digestion, helps control some diseases, helps regulate body temperature, aids digestion, and helps hydrate our joints & muscles. OK, that's good enough reasons for me. I'm going to try to get in 8 glasses of water a day, every day.

Our bodies need exercise to survive! Really? Well, all the experts say so. The Mayo Clinic lists seven direct benefits of exercise.....controls weight, combats health conditions & disease, improves mood, boosts energy, promotes better sleep, puts the spark back in your sex life, and they even claim that it can be fun. Well, I have to admit that there seems to be a reason there for everyone! I have learned not to hate exercise. I actually got a lot of exercise when I was younger.....just called it walking where I wanted to go, working in a factory, camping, hiking, gardening, housekeeping, etc. Now I call it walking for exercise, going to Curves, yoga at the Y, aquacise at the Y, etc. Bet I got a lot more active time in when I didn't call it exercise!

Setting goals helps you to know when you are getting there. Goals can be small. They don't have to be big to be effective. Right now, I want to lose 25 more pounds, but my goal is not 25 pounds. My goal is to reach the next level.....159.9 pounds. That looks a lot more doable to me & I can see that happening in a reasonable amount of time. Then my next goal will be to reach 149.9 pounds. Hey, that's under 150, which is my real goal. .1 pound is still a loss.

You can have friends you have never met. I have met many people on SP. Just like in face-to-face meetings, some have become acquaintances, some have become friends & some have become good friends. I'm lucky though because by being part of the Spark St. Louis team, I'll get to meet some of those people next Saturday. We are having our first meet-up & I'm excited. No, the whole team will not be there, but I'll meet the ones that are there. One of our team members is putting together another meet-up for the fall & some others may come to it.

If this was all I've gotten out of three years with Spark People, it would be enough. I've gained so much more, but then so have you. Take a few minutes to really think about all you've learned in the time you've been here.
