Pretty Routine Stuff

Well, another week has rolled around. I was waiting to see if anything noteworthy happened, so Iíd have something to blog about. Um, not really. Itís been a pretty routine week. I had a rush editing job, so Iíve been a little incommunicado. But, other than that, pretty much business as usual. I suppose I could post the video where I drew my creative journal entry with my toes, but nah, Iíll spare you. :)

In fitness-related news, I was finally able to add some light strength training back into the mix this week. It felt really good to be the GOOD kind of sore for a change. I know how important it is to have both cardio and strength, so Iím happy to be balancing that again. Iíve also picked up the pace on the elliptical and am making exceptionally good use of my SparkPeople workout towel. Whew!

And now we pause for a tiny, small, unimportant rant: I get a little frustrated with my FitBit results on the elliptical. Walking on my elliptical can be much more challenging than when I walk around the neighborhood. I add resistance and arms, really work up a sweat. I donít have the kind of elliptical you can run on; itís more like walking up steps underwater. It really works the legs/glutes and gets the heart pumping. So I feel like I get a great workout. But apparently, I take way fewer steps than when Iím bopping around the neighborhood. I suppose that makes sense, since Iím doing more of a climbing action. I dunno. Iíve tried putting the FitBit on my shoe and other spots, but it still registers way fewer steps than the same amount of time on the sidewalk. Is this important? No. Not really. I know Iím getting in a good workout both ways. Itís just a matter of pride, because I have a friendly competition going with one of my in-person FitBit/SparkBuddies (STEELERTOM) and heís been seriously kicking my bootie. We both talk a lot of smack, so suffice it to say, Iíve been eating my words lately.

Speaking of FitBit/SparkBuddies, Tom and I are really excited about a challenge weíre planning. Weíre both determined to earn our FitBit 30,000 Steps in a Day badge together. So, weíre mapping out some routes in a couple of different parks, doing the math, and carving out a Saturday to conquer the 30,000. We think itís going to average out to about 14 miles. Weíre planning on breaking it into two big walks, just to be careful that I donít re-injure myself. Itís not a race, weíre strictly aiming for number of steps, not speed. It canít be a race anyway, because heís going to have to slow down to match the pace of my hobbit legs. But isnít that cool, to be excited about doing a fitness challenge with a friend? Thatís certainly a change of attitude for both of us. And yes, weíre planning on vlogging it. So, thatíll be fun.

Last little bit of news, Audrey made the exciting discovery yesterday, that she has a collarbone again! She was very excited. I remember the first time I re-discovered a hip bone. I thought it was a tumor and that I was dying. Thatís how long it had been since Iíd felt it. But sheís excited, proud and motivated to stay healthy and strong. Her clothes are getting looser and fitting better. Sheís making this summer count.

Iíll leave you with my creative journal entry from yesterday, because itís somewhat nutritionally-related. The prompt was to make something in which the sense of taste is essential. I give you--

BREAKING NEWS: My buddy, FLORNH suggested I try changing the settings on my FitBit dashboard to sensitive, to see if that would reflect my steps on the elliptical more accurately. IT WORKED!! Now it's getting every single step. WooHoo!!! (Watch out, Tom!)

  Sometimes the routine stuff is best. I don't think I could handle a lot of excitement all the time. And, actually, I have too much excitement in my life right now as it is. Hooray for the routine stuff. Love the vampire banana, too. Sounds like an excellent week.

    No doubt about it; you're contagious! I mean that in the best of ways and now your family is "catching 'it'"! Audrey is doing great; she should feel good about it! I first caught hooping from you and now I'm hooked on streaks! Challenges, don't work for me but goodness---30,000 steps! Wooo - - - that's impressive! Fun to have someone to do it with you; it would take me at least 5 hours! You can see a lot of your community in 5 hours! Have fun. I too am looking forward to the vlog!

good challenge --I do mean challenge ..

Just a thought -- your fitbit might be recording not your steps but the amount of stairs you are climbing... but it will be counting the real calories you are burning .. check your fitbit site and sparks exercise site -- bet you are burning way more calories on the elliptical then when you walk the same amount of steps.

So glad you are doing so well, getting back to your full routine, including Strength!!

My device doesn't give me much step credit for rowing either. 2,500 or so steps for rowing 3 miles. Average walking is 2,000 steps =mile. Oh well....as long as the calories burned are good, it's OK. But, I'm not in a competition either...

30,000 steps!! WOW!!!! I hope there is an Epsom salt soak waiting for you, and a nice relaxing pedicure the next day! You really do set the bar high! Very cool to have a friend doing the challenge with you. Definitely looking forward to the vlog!

Good for you for pumping some iron. Good that you're taking it slow, being careful not to re-injure.

Elliptical DOES burn more calories...but you are taking less steps, I guess. Too bad you can't log them as extra steps because of the resistance.
