Eating elswhere other than at home?

Friday, July 05, 2013

I have a question to ask of all sparklers here on this site!!! I have trouble keeping track of calories when I eat elsewhere. When I eat at a restaurant(mcdonalds, Applebees etc. I dont have trouble because I can get calories online. But the real dilemma comes in when I eat as a guest somewhere such as at a family picnic, or meal. For instance, I was at my Dad's for family meal yesterday. He grilled marinated turkey tenders, french fries, onion rings etc. How do I calculate calories when I don't have a label to look at? I get frustrated and just don't even try to do it at all. Does anyone have any tips???? Please????

I just make my best guess, track it and move on. So for yesterday, I would have tracked something equivalent like a restaurant portion of onion rings and such.

Well I guess my first tip is skip the fried foods (they are higher in calories & fat and more difficult to calculate) but the marinated turkey? Easy 3oz of meat is about the size of a deck of cards. There are some other tricks like a TBLS is the size of the end of your pinky etc and you can look those up on this site I believe. The best thing to do is stick with the low fat, low calorie choices and bring yourself something healthy when eating at other peoples places! emoticon
