Independence Day has been an odd day of contrasts for me.
It's a day off work, and I turned off the alarm; but I didn't sleep well, and I was up for an hour in the middle of the night doing housework.
I had all day to get some exercise in. In the morning, there were light showers and the threat of scattered thundershowers. That, plus the fact that I haven't got around to replacing the front tire on my bike, was enough to scare me away from a long bike ride. Instead, I tested a walk. I managed to walk part of it without limping, and averaged a 17 minute mile pace. That's slow, but faster than I've done since the last foot injury. It also indicated to me that going to a fireworks display this evening would be a bad idea. I didn't want that much walking.
It's been four days since I mowed, and in the morning the grass was too wet to mow even though it needed it. I figured, maybe tomorrow. By 3 PM, we had sunshine. I could have gone for a bike ride, but I mowed instead. 86° F shouldn't be all that hot, but we have summer humidity now. I was glad to have a running wardrobe that wicks away sweat while I mowed.
Other than that, I did a lot of loafing. Got a nap in the early afternoon, making up for the lost hour of sleep last night. I was dilatory about the morning routine, though I did manage to add TGUs back in without irritating the foot. I got some exercise when I could, and rested when I needed to.
A day off with no obligations is a real luxury when recovering from injury.
And the ultimate contrast: It felt like a day of rest, but I broke 10K steps for the first time since June 24. While I'd like to say this is the start of the next 10K step streak, I don't think it is. I think this is a fluke, and I'll need to have fewer steps some of the next few days. Still, it's progress.
Now, off to bed. The town fireworks will start in about half an hour. I can't see them from my house, but I'll hear some of the louder ones. It will be a comforting sound as I drift off.
