As we celebrate our independence, let us take a moment and remember those courageous men who sacrificed their fortunes and their lives to assure that the United States would be free of British rule. Most of the signers of the Declaration of Independence died nearly penniless but in so doing insured our freedom. Over the past 237 years Americans have fought and died, at home and in far-away lands to assure that our freedom will survive. Perhaps, Lee Greenwood said it best:
And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.
Irving Berlin, a Russian born naturalized American said his favorite song of all that he had written was "God Bless America" Listen to the Kate Smith version on U-tube and ponder the words.
God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.
