“Mudslides, flooding cause evacuations and road closings”

Thursday, July 04, 2013

and BTW, today’s race is canceled too. You can’t argue with Mother Nature.

That downpour that soaked my shoes on Tuesday continued through Wednesday and the river is 3 ft above the 10 ft flood stage. The trail is under water as well as some areas of downtown Roanoke.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported although some people have had to be rescued from cars stranded by the rising water and a school has been opened as a shelter for those flooded out of their homes.

An email alert was sent out before sunrise so I knew not to set out for the race. Flash flooding is a danger around here with all the creeks feeding into the river.

In the dark you can’t distinguish between pavement and rushing water. Never fool around with Mother Nature.

As for the race, they’re deciding if it’s possible to reschedule. I’m OK either way. My entry fee went to a good cause. I ran my “Four on the Fourth” anyway all by myself this morning and added 4 miles walking for good measure.

Have a great 4th everyone and be careful out there.

I am glad you are safe. Good for you getting a run in on the 4th. I took a hot walk and was the only one around.

Wow! I surely wish you could send some of that rain our way. We are always, always, always in a state of drought. Even if it's pouring rain, well, we are so behind on rainfall that it doesn't matter and we are still in a state of drought. I'm sorry your race was cancelled, and I hope you get sunshine and a rainbow soon.

Whoa! Not getting that much rain in Northern Virginia. Hope it clears enough for a good fireworks show for you tonight.

Gosh, I didn't realize it was flooding in your area! We've had our share of rain here in the east (a daily occurrence, it seems), but now I know to STOP whining about all the rain emoticon

It’s flooding all over and a lot of places have cancelled their fireworks festivities. It’s great that you pressed on and completed your run, making no excuses. Like you stated, none messes with Mother Nature. Happy Independence Day, U.S.A! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

We're having similar flash flood issues because of the Waldo Canyon fire. Rivers of flowing mud while amazing to watch are still dangerous. People were actually turning around on the highway and driving back down on the same side they just came up on to get out of the way of the debris!

Whine! Can we have some of that rain? No, seriously, I'm grateful for what we HAVE had...

But do you folks have to get more than enough and have all those flooding issues?

Sorry about the race, but you're right about not arguing with Mother Nature when she pulls out the huge muscles. Have a great Independence Day, remembering what YOU have declared yourself independent from, being able to go out and run those 4 on the 4th miles!

I'm so sorry to see and hear that Mother Nature, is beating all of you up. The blessing in this whole mess is , that nobody has been hurt!!! Even though people are flooded out of their homes, gathering at the school, is a good thing. They can celebrate LIFE, together!!!

You're working so hard to get your miles in, and it's working!!! Keep it up!!!

Prayers going up for everyone.

God bless all of you,

- Nancy Jean -
