Day 24: The Real ME and Celebrating the 4th

Thursday, July 04, 2013

Ahhh! Another 4th of July to celebrate this great country. Backyard bbqs and picnics and, of course, fireworks. When I was younger, these celebrations were larger in comparison to today's. Of course, I think everything is bigger when we are kids. Today, of course, I look forward to ways to celebrate that offer fewer calories. I think today will be bbq garden burgers.

This great country of ours is worth celebrating. Many lost their lives ensuring us the freedoms that so many take for granted. Young people do not fully understand that the freedom we have in our country is so unique to the world. We can say what we like, with or without thinking, do what we like, in reason, and be covered by Freedom of Speech. They have not experienced tyranny in its ugliest state. Look at the number of deaths under the regime of Saddam Hussein. He killed so many because they dared to question him and his government. Look at what is happening in Darfur. Hundreds of thousands have died. It is seen as "one of the worst human" rights abuses imaginable. eyesondarfur.org/crisis.

All one has to do is write "Human Rights Violations" in a search engine, and voila. Atrocities can be seen everywhere. However, most of the incidents found will not be from the USA. No. They occur on foreign lands. I am utterly saddened by what is happening across our world, but so grateful to live in a country where we are given certain rights.

I am also thankful to live in a country that allows us to have free use of the internet. I think I would be lost if I did not have my daily dose of SparkPeople. It has enabled me to track what I eat and what I do. It even allows me to blog about whatever I want. I am a free thinker and am treated as such without punishment of imprisonment. What a great country I live in!!!!

So, today I celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I celebrate my new healthy self and the freedom to share with the world. I am so appreciative that I can praise the One and Only True God who gave His son, Jesus so that I might live with Him eternally in heaven one day. I can say that without fear of death or going to prison.

I remember those who gave their lives for ME...someone they did not know so that I can live without fear. I am free! Thank God! I am free!

Great blog--thanks for the reminder! I, too, am grateful for all the freedoms we enjoy here in the U.S. I try to instill that in my students so they may have a clue as to how lucky they are. Have a great day!
