Orphaned newborn kittens

Thursday, July 04, 2013

My cat Phoebe a stray I took in recently died today. She left behind 5 baby kittens. They will be a week old on Sat. My kids have eyedroppers, baby pet bottles, baby cat formula and plan to try to keep them alive. Phoebe was a outside cat but they brought her orphan baby kittens in the house. Any advice from cat loving spark people would be appreciated. My girls cried because they lost Phoebe I'm hoping they can keep some of the kittens alive. I don't know what happened to Phoebe, she started acting sick yesterday morning. She was limping, acting too tired to feed her babies, limping and the last few hours she was breathing harder. I sure will miss Phoebe and I'm hoping to keep one of her kittens if they survive.

I am so sorry to read this, Karen. I know how you were so happy to have Phoebe. I really hope the kittens stay alive. Sending a big big hug to you.

So sorry the mother died. Keep the kittens warm. You have all the right materials to keep them alive. Feed them every few hours and stroke their bellies so they can go to the bathroom. If you have a battery clock keep it near the kittens the ticking will be like a mothers heart beat to them. Change their bedding when is gets soiled. Set your alarm to get up in the night and feed the kittens. You should be fine. emoticon

I would call a local vet to see if they have any suggestions. It shouldn't cost you anything and you want to be sure that the mother did not pass anything along to the kittens. Strays can have any of several cat diseases.

I am sorry that the mom cat died. The kids will do just fine.
There are a lot of material at the library and online about caring for kittens.
I can look some of for you if you like. My aunt had a cat who died this year.
Baby started off as a part stray cat. He learned to love being around people.
Barb had to put him down right after the New Year.
He had a very happy 11 yrs though. I pray the same thing for your kittens.
Hope that you all have a Safe, Happy, and Blessed Fourth!!!!!!!!!
