Financial Flab

So, I just finished tracking EVERY expenditure I made for 30 days (all of June). And, man. The news is both bad and great.

The GREAT news is that I'm going to have a LOT of spare money soon. Because there are a LOT of expenditures which I can cut back.

The bad news, of course, being that I spent a lot of money last month that I didn't need to spend.

Interestingly, to me: most of that wasted money was invested in...appearances. Not physical ones. But gestures, gifts, even extravagances...for OTHER PEOPLE. And not even other people about whom I particularly care deeply (sorry, but true).

It averages out to about $15/day, believe it or not. Between the Starbucks frothy mess I didn't even want to drink, but bought because an acquaintance whom I wanted to impress, was buying one. Through an obligatory birthday present to a friend who's been terrible to me lately. To the hostess gift for people I don't like, for a dinner I didn't want to go to.

When I think about all the other things I could have done with that money. Debts I could have repaid. ACTUAL friends whose lives I could have made happier...or even easier. The emergency fund I could have started for this new-ish house I'm in.

Man, it makes me glad I'm doing so very, very well on my weight and fitness goals...because without those successes to anchor me, I think I'd be in shock and despair, all due to this yellow legal pad next to me.

Tracking is the first step to changing the reality we live in. Tracking food, tracking money, tracking exercise, etc.

The best way to get ahead, track it all!

Gail Vaz-Oxlade is excellent as a common sense financial planner, although a tad direct emoticon

    Good luck!
