Ugly Betty (2006–10)
This show debuted a few months after the premiere of the hit movie adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s novel The Devil Wears Prada, in which a plain young woman is hired as an assistant at a fashion magazine. Betty was partially based on the book version of Prada, but series developers Silvio Horta and Salma Hayek modeled the show more closely on a 1999–2001 Colombian soap opera called Yo Soy Betty, La Fea (“I Am Betty, the Ugly One”). ABC’s Ugly Betty was one of 18 international versions of the Colombian show.
