I've been hearing so much lately about the need to exercise even if it is "just" walking. There is nothing "just" about walking. I began a fairly serious walking program about 2 years ago when, at a Ladies Lunch one day, I asked my friends if they would like to start walking in the morning. We are fortunate to live fairly close to a great forest preserve with a walking/biking path so we decided to meet at the one woman's house and start there. It was about a 3 mile walk and took just about an hour. Both of these women are taller than me and it was a much harder workout for me to keep up with them. There were hills and the first couple of weeks were tough. But soon I began to notice my endurance improving and it wasn't such a struggle to keep up. Every day we walked and talked and it was a great experience emotionally and physically. Unfortunately, they both have moved but I continue to walk (in the spring, summer and fall) and am now up to 3.5/mph without pushing myself.
I am much healthier and with dietary changes I have lost weight.
Walking outside is beneficial to your emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. Being out in nature lifts my spirits and motivates me to watch what I eat when I return. I get my daily dose of Vitamin D on sunny days and I am calmer and more at peace with what is going on in my life.
Walking is the original exercise!!! Man has confused things to the point where we think we have to push this great body God gave us to the point of exhaustion when all we need to do is get up and do what comes naturally.
