July Already?

Monday, July 01, 2013

Wow, June just flew by didn't it? Well, I am not back to running yet, this hamstring sprain is lingering. I did talk to my niece the doctor and received some good advice. I am using my foam roller for massage and she suggested a compression sleeve to wear while I am exercising to support the muscle and provide heat. She said it is likely not a tear, but because it is a large muscle and not real way to rest it, it just takes a long time to heal. Patience not really my strong suit, oh well. I continue with my walking and elliptical and hopefully the compression sleeve will let me start back to running.

I have been getting over 10,000 steps consistently with my Fitbit Flex - with the exception of one travel day with unexpected delays and airport closures due to weather. However, I realized I was not really getting a good cardio workout on enough days. So I am committed on at least 4 or 5 of those days to include a 45 or 50 minute elliptical workout to really get my heart rate up.

I also treated my sisters to Fitbits (and my husband got one too) and now we are texting each other with how we are doing. I get the sense it may get a little competitive and that is probably a good thing. My husband wearing it on his wrist said he feels like a moose in Maine that has been tagged, but even he is focused on getting his steps in and is trying to loose weight. He has lost about 6 lbs and is heading in the right direction.

That is about all that is new here. Looks like a beautiful day for a walk and a short work week as my company gives us Friday off after the 4th of July - so only 3 working days this week! I think I will increase my target steps to 12,000 this week and see how that goes!

Have a great week and a safe 4th of July!

Several people at my church are planning to get fit bits after seeing my progress with walking and getting fit. I can't wait because they are so motivating. I am basically competing against myself as my husband is not competitive like I am. He is still wearing his pedometer but is not stoked like I am, but am doing good with that. That is are personalities though.

I am so sorry to hear your healing is taking longer than planned. I really hope this improves for you. I am trying really hard to push and not overdo and get hurt. It's really hard sometimes for me to find the balance. I am trying to listen to my body, but it's still a little confused with all the changes it's making. So I am trying to listen hard. emoticon emoticon emoticon

A little competition is always a good thing! Great job on getting all your steps in even though you can't do your running!

Just checked the attic for adoption papers, and sure enough, I'm your sister, baby! Fitbit forthcoming? LOL! Kidding aside, the healthy competition is a good thing.

Nice that your husband is on board too. Makes life so much easier! Mine is doing the same thing and is hiking off his retired CPA belly w/2 hikes every week. (Parks Dept. group) He uses some sort of pocket device that counts his steps. It really helps with awareness~he'll do some extra things to get his steps past 10,000 if it's close.

So sorry about your hamstring injury. That is a slow and painful area. I was a Massage Practitioner for many years and did some sports massage and a lot of treatment and injury work. Cross fiber friction might help with the healing. If you know of a good treatment and injury Massage Therapist , you might consider an appointment.

Please have a fun and safe 4th of July too! The eating choices sure get tough with all of the summer graduations, weddings, parties, and potlucks~then the holiday BBQ's. (sigh) the smell alone is a trigger for me. Let's stay strong and make each other proud! emoticon Enjoy your long week-end~ you deserve it! emoticon

Hamstring injuries are very deceptive. One time I got one doing some hamstring curls on a machine at the gym. I did not feel anything until like a day later and of course I thought it was soreness from the exercise. But like a week later when I went to do the exercise it would hurt. When I ran, my butt would cramp. I stopped the exercise machines. Then one day when I went to run - no pain.

I agree - don't know where June went...or May, for that matter! Lately, I'm struck by how important it is to become more aware make every day count.

I'm sorry to hear that your injury is taking longer to heal than we'd hoped, but it sounds like you have a great attitude about it. You're doing what you can. Kudos!

Great idea to get FitBits for other family members...want to adopt me??? emoticon

Seriously, it's on my list - perhaps the next purchase - but I haven't even had the courage to investigate cost yet. I will... :)

Hope you have a great day today, Noreen.
