July Initiatives

Monday, July 01, 2013

July is a busy month for our family.

We celebrate Independence Day with a picnic in the park followed by fireworks and my grand daughter draining my wallet for tickets so she can ride the carnival rides.

Our second son Matt celebrates his 35th birthday July 6.
Joan and I celebrate 39 years of marriage on July 20
My dads birthday is July 27. He would have been 89
Our DGD birthday is July 30.

It's going to be a busy month.

In August I celebrate one of them there milestone birthdays. I'll be 60 and while I am really pleased with many things in my life I am not pleased with my journey towards being healthier. Truth be told: I was one of those people who said he'd always have some time to get things squared away. Now, I know at 60 that I'm not ready for the wheel chair and a blanket but in the past few months my health and well being has moved to center stage.

Funny how God works isn't it?

I gained 8 pounds in June and oh gosh I cant tell you how gosh darned sick and tired I am of falling down and getting up. No more. I been playing around with the same 15 pounds for over a year now and I'm not even fooling myself any longer. So my goals or initiatives for July are simple.

By August 6 I am going to have lost 12 pounds. How?

I am going to exercise 30 minutes daily 6x a week.
I am going to track my food and eat wisely. (I KNOW what needs to be done.)
I am going to take time to meditate daily, even if for only 10 minutes.

Yeah, I know there is no pearl of wisdom here. I believe that sometimes we can get so darned sophisticated that we shoot ourselves in the foot. It's pretty vanilla: Diet, Exercise, Rest.

Here is where I need your help. If though the course of your day you think about me could you drop me a note to see how I'm doing and demand, in a nice way of course, that I answer you with some accountability. I know you are busy but I'd appreciate it.

Like I said nothing exotic here today, Diet, Exercise, Rest.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried that before

I love your renewed commitment! You can do this! Sometimes it takes a major milestone to really get it to sink in how important our health is. For me it was turning 30. We'll keep working until we get it right!

For me, goals that aren't specific often aren't realized...Simplicity and breaking it all down works. You've sparked me into working on my own goals and tweaking them.

p.s. I'm at the tail end of a wave of birthdays and celebrations and it's been a bumpy ride. Hang on tight and Good luck with your July initiatives... emoticon

Sounds like a reasonable, obtainable goal and a solid plan to get it done.

Your July sounds as busy as mine. Good luck!

    Dear John,

I feel your pain! It always comes back to the basics that I don't always want to do!

July is certainly a celebration month for your wonderful family. Have lots of fun which I know you all will. Especially terrific is your 39th wedding anniversary, you and Joan were blessed to have found each other.

Is Aug. 6th your birthday? That will be a nice present for you losing the 12 lbs. and I'm sure you WILL do it!

Have a great day!

My goodness John you are going to be busy. I to will be turning 60 in august and I am fighting with my pounds as well. Much stress in my life right now so exercise is the key. Eating is to write evey thing down, other wise I will reach for any thing that looks like it's wrong. Rest is a must with meditation as well. Spending time with our
Lord in prayer and in the word. I hope this helps John. Keep up the great work, you WILL get rid of the weight. emoticon

Congrats on all the special celebrations in July. I am SO where you are. I lost 10 lbs. and have gained back 5. I have the summer off for the most part so I have no excuse other than no motivation. I ate a bunch of junk this weekend and I'm with you. I was in great shape when I turned 50 and now, at 54, I'm in worse shape with extra weight to lose. Again. I'm so tired of the roller coaster. Let's do this! I'll be checking in!

OK John - you are starting the new month full of fire! Congratulations.
How will you exercise, do you have specific plans? On my end, I count my steps and try to go for 10,000 per day. I reached this gradually. For food -and I do not like the word "diet"!, what are you planning on doing? Personally, I find that choosing precise goals helps. Diet, exercise, rest is good, but try to be more specific and make yourself a checklist. It is so gratifying to cross off a task!
