Fast Metabolism Diet: day 2

Sunday, June 30, 2013

I started the FMD yesterday after reading the book on Friday. I really want to lose about 30 pounds also because I think it will help my running time improve and lessen the stress on my knees and ankle. I had a lot of the foodstuff on hand so I just decided to start the diet, plus I needed to run yesterday and you're only supposed to do cardio on days 1 and/or 2.

Cardio was terrible yesterday, partly because of the intense heat, but mostly because my ankle is acting up again. I was supposed to do 11 miles but I only did 8, walking the last .75 mile, because my ankle hurt too much. I iced and soaked in epsom salts when I got home, and I'm resting it today. I've also done some stretching. I might even soak it in epsom salts again today.

I think I know why it's acting up--the week before, I ran without soaking or icing afterwards because my dad was visiting and we were busy going out and doing stuff, so I only had time to run, shower, and go. Up until then, my ankle had been steadily getting better, but I think not icing and soaking made it revert back to the old injury.

Yesterday I made the turkey kale bean soup but I substituted lean ground beef for the turkey (in addition, I browned it, then dumped it in a colander and rinsed it to get rid of as much oil as possible), and I substituted beets for the winter squash and chard for the kale. Too late I realized chard isn't on the phase 1 list, but oh well, I don't think that'll be too bad.

What I didn't realize until today (when I was shopping) was how much added stuff is in canned beans! Holy cow there's all these chemicals in it to keep it looking pretty or to keep the texture. Yuck! I hope that doesn't stall my weight loss, because I used 3 cans in the soup yesterday.

The recipe says it feeds 4, but I ended up with 18 cups of soup! I ate 3 cups each meal (1.5 portions, according to the book) and it seems like a lot. I went over my calorie count, although not my fat count.

I'm trusting in the book and what she says, but the portions seem awfully large.

I don't know if I lost any weight from yesterday because I didn't weight myself (forgot to) until after breakfast, when I was about 151 pounds. Today I'm 150.6. I'm also about to start my period so I don't know how that's affecting things.

I've also got a headache today. I don't know if it's a hormone-induced headache because of my period, or if it's somehow to do with the diet. I don't want to tax my liver by taking Tylenol, but I did take some feverfew. It helped a little bit.

Another thing, today I seem to be really hungry. After each meal yesterday, I wasn't very hungry until snack time or the next meal time. Today, I was starving a couple hours after breakfast, and a couple hours after my snack I was hungry again. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing.

I loaded up on meats for days 3 and 4, phase 2. I hope I'll be able to do it, I tend to be a carb fiend. Luckily I like veggies so I think it'll be okay.

Thanks Melinda! That's good to know. I weighed myself this morning and had no change in weight, which made me a little disappointed, but I'm wondering if the stress of the headache stalled any weight loss? I'll wait until day 5 to see.

EXOTEC, I did rinse the beans before using them, so that makes me feel better! This particular diet has 2 carb heavy days and then 2 protein heavy days.

Oh those beans! yeah, they're FULL of stuff. Not much of it beneficial. It sort of defeats the purpose, but if you're just using plain beans (not baked beans or other "recipe" beans), you can rinse and soak them briefly in your colander before you use them. Of course, you're still loading yourself up with carbs. That's not likely to assist your weight loss!

MYBULLDOGS is right about the sugar and grains. Lots of (good, reliable) research out there these days on that topic. Part of the reason you're feeling hungry is 1) consuming carbs creates hunger and craving for more carbs; and 2) eliminating satiating fat from your diet leaves you hungry. I suspect the hunger is not likely to abate so long as those things are still part of your regimen.

But we all have to find our path. Hope your experiment with this new plan works well for you!

I had a bad headache for a few days, after cutting the caffeine. I was also tired and went to bed early the first week but after that, lots of energy :)

I do weigh most daily, just for data purposes, I don't trip on it until I see the weekly number. I have found that the morning after 2 protein days, which is the morning of the first Fat day, is my lowest weight for the week, so that is the one I like to see emoticon

Good luck on your journey!
Melinda
