Price of Dried Mangoes

Saturday, June 29, 2013

I think I've probably mentioned it here before but, if not, I love dehydrated mangoes! My kids and I will fight over them. They love them fresh also but I love to have jars of them dehydrated. It's just hard to get them to that point without being eaten first. I lost count of how many I bought last month so I could dehydrate about 8 of them!

On to my point, I was so happy to still have a jar of dehydrated mangoes in the pantry this morning! I sat down to talk to a friend and ate the whole jar! It was awesome, but as I went to track it tonight I decided I better look up the actual nutritional value of just plain dehydrated mangoes and as I was doing that I ran across Amazon's price for all natural, organic dried mango. That's exactly what we have. We cut the mango, dehydrate it, eat it. Nothing added. Simple. Delicious. So, their price for a pack of 4 (1.5oz) packs is $25 ($6.33/pack)!!! That is like just crazy outrageous. For the price of two of those, you could buy a good dehydrator! And fresh mangoes are only .68/ea right now! 1.5oz is approx 3 mangoes! So the same 1.5 oz of mango made at home would cost about $2. So now I have even more reason to be happy when I eat dehydrated mango - I'm saving about $4/serving!

Now I should go check the price of dehydrated pineapple. We go through about 8 pineapples per month.

I love DIY fruit. I'm in Michigan so strawberries right now. The best is when apple/pear/peach season hit. Then it's hard to keep up.

Side question- Do you make your own granola? It's only one extra step.
