On the ACE news feed (Facebook) this morning I saw an article on how the AMA is now calling obesity a disease. On the Yahoo page I saw an article how the fashion world is finally catching on and making cute clothes for the plus sized "full figured" gals. A breath of fresh air for so many.
How to reconcile this one.
I can't get on board with obesity being labeled a disease. I just can't. I wonder what this is going to mean. Will insurance companies start shelling out for gym memberships, nutritionists and PTs for their obese members? Will this result in more obesity surgeries and medications being tossed out there? I'm cynical and I tend to think the latter will be the outcome. But, maybe not.
Though, as far as I am concerned, obesity is a side effect or a symptom, not a disease in and of itself....and calling it one is silly.
And if it is......should the fashion world be catering to it?
As a former plus size I understand how hard it can be to find clothes....but that was over a decade ago. In the past few years it is abundant. Soon enough, where I live, that will be the majority of the clothes in most big chain stores. And it is cute already. Heck, I think that much of the time it is cuter than my misses options.
Anyway, I'm still sort of tossing these things around in my head. I'm not sure that either is a great thing to fighting the epidemic (and that it absolutely is) of obesity in our culture.
