New Med

Thursday, June 27, 2013

I attended a Continuing Medical Education program after work tonight.
A new class of drug for the treatment of diabetes has been approved by the FDA. It is SGLT2 inhibitors. It works by causing blood sugar to be excreted in the urine. It's only one pill a day which is good. However, the wholesale price is planned to be nearly $9.00 per pill! We can just imagine what the various drug stores are going to charge retail! What is this drug? In the USA the brand name is Invokana.

My bp pill is $4.02 for one pill. It's outrageous what the "legal drug cartel" charges for meds.

Since I am a poor person, I strongly suspect my insurance would refuse to cover that.

I'll stick to metformin for now. It works and it is cheap. There are too many of these new drugs with serious side effects.

Oh my, that's really expensive - an elite drug not for the common folk who probably can't afford it.
