My best friend Joselyn gave me the Honor of being in her wedding, her Matron of Honor. She ask me in May of 2012. Her wedding was going to be in October of 2012.
My first thought was I have to lose weight. I want to look really nice standing up for her. This time I would do it because I had motivation. It didn't happen though. I tried sort of. My head told me I wanted it but my heart wasn't in it!
We went shopping for dresses in June. The dress she chose for me was beautiful. If I could lose weight I would feel and look amazing. The sales lady decided to order a dress size up. My heart fell. I told myself by October I would have to have so much taken in. Still it didn't happen.
The defining moment...I received an email at work asking for people to apply for the Body, Mind & Wellness (B3) program at work. I thought hmmmm...
So I read the criteria. Family history of heart problems, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoker. Wait my cholesterol is high so I filled out the application. I got an interview.
During the interview I was told what was expected of me. Monday 6:30am-7:30am I would go to yoga class. Tuesday & Thursday 5:30 am- 6:45 am I would go to ST & Cardio class. I would do one workout on my own once a week and on alternating Wed evenings I would go to a Nutritional class/Stress Management class. I would follow the Mediterranean diet. All for 16 weeks. It seemed like the perfect plan for me. I prayed they would choose me as one of the 12 people for the program.
Two weeks later the director of the program called me. I was invited to join. She told me I was one of the healthiest people chosen for the program but I could use help with my nutrition plus she like my positive attitude and she figured I would be a motivator for the group.
Aug 28, 2012 I started the program. The wedding was only few weeks away. By this time I wasn't going to lose enough weight to have my dress size be smaller. I changed my mindset. I decided healthy was going to be my new plan.
I had lab work done to see my starting point for my cholesterol and fasting sugar. I had an EKG. I did a Body Composition test performed as well.
The program was great. I did everything asked of me. I followed the eating plan 90% of the time. I made friends with the group. I was sorry to see it end in Dec 2012 but I was ready to go on my own. I had learned so much about myself. I was healthy and in control.
I lost 6 lbs. Not as much as I thought I would but it was a loss. My cholesterol numbers improved & I lost inches. I was happy. I knew I could do it.
Each member of my group would have to be assessed 6 months later to see if we were still making good strides with our health.
The B3 program was a trial program for the hospital. So each group who went through the program were hospital employees & guinea pigs to get the kinks out of the program before it was taken out into the community.
June 2013...I went for my assesment. I have lost more inches and my lab work is improved more.
My good news: I have been asked to be one of the spokes people for the program for PR. I feel so honored.
I didn't lose the weight I wanted for my Best friend's wedding. I did get the push I needed to make losing weight now or never.
Finding the BLC 21 challenge has helped me to continue my journey. I know what I want and I'm going after it.
